Memphis vs. Tennessee women's basketball to star at FedExForum in 2024-25

The Memphis women's basketball program's home-and-home deal with Tennessee features a literal asterisk.

The first game of the series is set for Nov. 13 in Knoxville. The return game, scheduled for the 2024-25 season, will be played at FedExForum, according to a copy of the competition agreement, which was obtained by The Commercial Appeal via open records request.

It will be the first time the Memphis women's team has played a home game at FedExForum — the downtown arena (18,400-seat capacity) where the Tigers' men's team and Memphis Grizzlies play their home games — since Feb. 7, 2015.

A specific date for the game has not been set. The contract stipulates it "will be selected based upon FEF schedule including NBA contests/holds, other venue events and commitments and Memphis Men’s Basketball dates."

The most recent time the women's team won a game at FedExForum was Feb. 24, 2013, versus UTEP. That's also the last time the Tigers played there against a team other than perennial national power UConn. Saint Louis is the most recent nonconference opponent to face Memphis at FedExForum (Nov. 11, 2011).

This season's meeting between the Tigers and Vols will be the first in more than two decades. The most recent time they met was Dec. 29, 2001, at Elma Roane Fieldhouse. The in-state programs faced each other 26 times from 1974 to 2001, with the Volunteers winning 25 of them. The Tigers' lone win was a 79-75 victory during the 1978-79 season, when they finished ranked No. 20.

The game at FedExForum will be the 12th meeting between them in Memphis.
