Meet the T&G Hometeam high school girls' soccer Super Team for fall 2023

The Central Mass High School Sports Awards is proud to announce the player of the year nominees for the 2023 fall sports season. The winners will be announced during the live show on Wednesday, June 26, at the Hanover Theatre.
The Central Mass High School Sports Awards is proud to announce the player of the year nominees for the 2023 fall sports season. The winners will be announced during the live show on Wednesday, June 26, at the Hanover Theatre.

The Central Mass. High School Sports Awards is proud to announce the player of the year nominees for the Hometeam Girls' Soccer Athlete of the Year. The winners will be announced during the live show on Wednesday, June 26, at the Hanover Theatre.

During the live show, athletes of the year in 31 sports will be honored. In addition, top teams, coaches and overall athletes will be honored as will a Courage Award winner. Nominated athletes who RSVP will receive a complimentary ticket to the event thanks to sponsors. Details on how additional tickets can be obtained will be available soon.

The Central Mass. High School Sports Awards show is part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards, the largest high school sports recognition program in the country. This year, one school from the area will win a $1,000 donation to its school’s athletic department through our School Spirit Contest. Details on how to vote for your school will be coming soon.

Here are the nominees for Hometeam Girls' Soccer Athlete of the Year:

Sophomore, Forward

Davis scored 30 goals and had 19 assists, broke a program scoring record that stood since 2004, and led the Wolves to the Division 2 state semifinals. Davis ranked second in Central Mass. in scoring. and Nashoba finished its outstanding season 18-2-2. The Wolves began the year with a 17-match unbeaten streak. Defeating Melrose, 1-0, in the state quarterfinals and advancing to the Final Four was Davis’ most memorable moment of the season. Nashoba advanced to the semifinals of the CMADA Class A tourney. A Bolton resident, Davis is the daughter of Tatiana Farberova and Aaron Davis.

Meghan Dowd

Shrewsbury High

Senior, Center back

Dowd anchored Shrewsbury’s defense and helped lead the Colonials to the CMADA Class A final and an appearance in the Division 1 state tournament. Scoring the winning penalty kick in the CMADA quarterfinals against Westborough was Dowd’s most memorable moment of the season. She scored four goals and had two assists, and earned Mid-Wach A all-star honors. Dowd was a team captain. In the fall, she will attend Stonehill College, where she will study biochemistry and play soccer. She is the daughter of Julianne and Matthew Dowd of Shrewsbury.

Grayson Edwards

Edwards scored 26 goals and had 16 assists to help lead the Wolves to the Division 2 state semifinals. Scoring on a penalty kick to beat Melrose, 1-0, in the state quarterfinals and celebrating with her teammates was Edwards’ most memorable moment of the season. Nashoba, which opened the year with 17-match unbeaten streak, finished its outstanding season 18-2-2. Edwards had a goal and an assist in Nashoba’s win over Leominster that sent the Wolves to the semifinals of the CMADA Class A tourney. Grayson has been elected captain for next season. She is the daughter of Karla and Larry Edwards of Stow.

Lola Follansbee

Senior, Center forward

Follansbee scored 19 goals and added 10 assists to rank among the SWCL leaders and help the Gators reach the quarterfinals of the Division 2 state tournament. Rallying from a two-goal deficit to beat Duxbury, 3-2, in the state tourney round of 16 was Follansbee’s most memorable moment of the season. Grafton finished its outstanding year 17-4. Follansbee was a captain and SWCL all-star. She finished her career with 75 goals. In the fall, she will attend St. Michael’s College, where she will study health sciences and play soccer. She is the daughter of Stacey and Rob Follansbee of Grafton.

Natalie Frazier

Auburn High

Junior, Striker

Frazier scored 31 goals and had two assists, and led SWCL A in scoring. She helped the Rockets reach the second round of the Division 3 state tournament and the final of the CMADA Class B tourney. Scoring all seven of her team’s goals in its three CMADA games, including two against Nipmuc Regional in the championship match, was Frazier’s most memorable moments of the season. She led Auburn to a 16-4-1 record. Frazier earned SWCL all-star honors for soccer and indoor track. She is the daughter of Catherine and Alex Frazier of Auburn.

Margaret Johnson

Senior, Center midfielder

Johnson ranked among the Central Mass. scoring leaders and helped the Crusaders make their first state final appearance. Johnson scored in Whitinsville Christian’s 3-0 win over Douglas in the Division 5 state semifinals, and reaching the state championship game was her most memorable moment of the season. Johnson finished the season with 34 goals and 11 assists, and as the all-time goals leader in program history. The Crusaders finished their historic season 22-3. Johnson was a two-year captain, three-time Dual Valley Conference all-star, and the DVC Player of the Year. In the fall, she will attend Marist College, where she will study business. She is the daughter of Erika and Bryan Johnson.

Sophomore, Forward

Magnuson repeated as a T&G Super Team selection, and helped the Suzies capture their third straight state championship. After winning the Division 5 title in 2021 and 2022, Sutton moved up to Division 4 this year. Defeating South Hadley, 2-1, in the D4 final was Magnuson’s most memorable moment of the season. Magnuson scored 29 goals and added nine assists, and earned Dual Valley Conference all-star honors for the second time. She was team captain, and helped the Suzies win the CMADA Class C title for the third year in a row. She is the daughter of Tanya and Chuck Magnuson of Sutton.

Anya Montano

Nipmuc Regional

Sophomore, Midfield

Montano scored 13 goals and had 11 assists, and helped the Warriors advance to the quarterfinals of the Division 3 state tournament. Scoring the winning goal in penalty kicks to beat Foxborough in the round of 16 was Montano’s most memorable moment of the season. In that game, she assisted on her sister Kyah’s tying goal in regulation. Montano earned her second Dual Valley Conference all-star honor. Nipmuc finished its season 17-3-2. Montano hopes to play soccer in college. She is the daughter of Sarah and Ben Montano of Bellingham.

Maddie Pitro

West Boylston High

Senior, Striker/Center Mid

Pitro led her team in scoring with 25 goals and 11 assists, and helped the Lions to a Division 5 state tournament appearance. She was a two-time Mid-Wach D all-star, and, this year, the league’s MVP. Scoring five goals on Senior Night was Pitro’s most memorable moment of the season. She was a two-year captain. Last winter, Pitro earned T&G Super Team honors in basketball. Pitro plans to study healthcare management in college. She is the daughter of Daniell and John Pitro of West Boylston.

Senior, Goalkeeper

Rosenshire posted seven shutouts in 18 games and allowed just 17 goals, the fewest in Mid-Wach A. She helped the Rangers to the Division 2 state tournament round of 16. Making a back-to-the-bar jumping/diving save against league rival Algonquin Regional was Rosenshire’s most memorable moment of the season. She scored a penalty kick in a CMADA Class A tourney match against Shrewsbury. Rosenshire is a two-year captain of Westborough’s ski race team, and her other extracurricular activities include Project 351, a teen mental health initiative, and serving as an assistant Hebrew school teacher. In the fall, she will attend Union College, where she will study mechanical engineering and play soccer. A Westborough resident, she is the daughter of Kristen Vincent and Andrew Rosenshine.

Senior, Midfielder

Tomasetti scored 12 goals and had three assists, and helped lead the Titans to the CMADA Class A championship and the Division 1 state tournament round of 16. Beating Shrewsbury, 1-0, to capture the CMADA title was Tomasetti’s most memorable moment of the season. A two-time Mid-Wach A all-star, Tomasetti finished her career with 19 goals and 10 assists. In the fall, she will attend Westfield State University, where she will study marketing and play soccer. She is the daughter of Wendi and Paul Tomasetti of Northborough.

VanBuskirk repeated as a T&G Super Team selection after leading Central Mass. with 38 goals, and helping the Panthers reach the Division 2 state tournament round of 16, which was one of her most memorable moments of the season. Scoring her 100th career goal was another 2023 highlight. VanBuskirk added nine assists and earned her second Mid-Wach B MVP honor. She was a three-year captain and three-time league all-star. VanBuskirk is an indoor track record holder at Marlborough and two-time T&G Super Team honoree. In the fall, she will attend the University of New Hampshire (Hamel Honors & Scholars College), where she will study psychology. She is the daughter of Pam and Joe VanBuskirk of Marlborough.
