Meet The Oklahoman's 2023-24 Super 5 boys basketball Coach of the Year candidates

The Oklahoman will announce its Super 5 and All-State boys basketball teams on April 14.

With that date approaching, it’s time to meet the candidates for boys basketball Super 5 Coach of the Year.

Across the state, coaches made program history, ended state title droughts and compiled impressive winning streaks. After a review of these accomplishments, three coaches have emerged as finalists for the award.

Brian Montonati, Owasso

The story: Montonati achieved the best season in Owasso program history by earning the school's first-ever state championship in his seventh year. The former Oklahoma State standout saw 2024 as redemption following Owasso's 18-9 season and short state tournament stint a year ago. Aided by the efforts of his son, Jalen, the Rams finished this season 26-4 while defeating two-time defending Class 6A champion Edmond North in the state title game. Owasso beat opponents by an average of 26 points while squaring off toe-to-toe with some of the best high school programs in the state and the country.

Torey Noel, Midwest City

The story: A year after winning just six games in Class 6A, Noel capitalized on Midwest City's drop down to 5A with a state championship. Noel finished 25-3 in his first season coaching at his alma mater to win the Bombers' first gold ball since 2007. He led them past a host of top Class 5A competitors, such as Guthrie, Carl Albert and Tulsa Booker T. Washington en route to the title. Midwest City ended its season riding a 13-game win streak behind Roy Henderson and Carlsheon Young while competing in numerous single-digit battles.

Brandon Weaver, Oklahoma Christian School

The story: Weaver's presence on the sidelines proved crucial in one of the best seasons in Oklahoma Christian School's program history. He led the Saints to a 26-2 record in his ninth year under the helm to win OCS' first state championship since 2007. Weaver is one of the very best X's and O's coaches in the state and guided the Saints to defeat the two-time defending Class 3A state champion Millwood for a title. The title marks Weaver's third altogether after previously winning in 2011 and 2013 on Edmond Memorial's coaching staff.
