Meet the nominees for Press-Citizen's Athlete of the Week, Feb. 26-March 2

The Iowa City area was well represented in last week’s Iowa girls basketball state tournament. Clear Creek Amana and Solon clinched state titles in Class 4A and 3A, respectively. CCA (26-0) earned its first state title in program history with a 43-29 win over Waverly-Shell Rock. Solon (24-3) defeated Estherville-Lincoln Central, 54-47, to win its first state title since 1998.

On the boys side, there was only one basketball game, and it saw Iowa City West fall short in a 55-52 loss to Bettendorf in the Class 4A-3 substate finals on Tuesday, Feb. 27. The Trojans finished their season with a 19-4 record.

Here are the nominees for the Iowa City Press-Citizen’s high school Athlete of the Week for Feb. 26- March 3. Press-Citizen.com readers vote to decide this week’s winners.

Callie Levin, Solon

Levin was named to the Class 3A All-Tournament team. She played a huge role in the Spartans’ first state title win in 26 years.

The University of Iowa commit scored a team-high 27 points and had five assists in the 3A state title game. She had a team-high four 3-pointers and tallied seven assists. She finished with a total of 56 points, second-most in the 3A tournament.

Ava Locklear, Clear Creek Amana

Locklear had a stellar performance in the Iowa girls state basketball tournament.

In the Class 4A state title game, Locklear scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high 19 rebounds. She finished the tournament with a total of 42 points across three games for the Clippers. Locklear also finished with 43 rebounds, a 4A state tournament record, and was named team captain for the 4A All-Tournament team.

Averie Lower, Clear Creek Amana

Lower had the green light for the Clippers in the state tournament.

The second-year starter finished with a team-high 17 points and four 3-pointers in the 4A state title game. She was named to the 4A All-Tournament team, finishing with a total of 50 points with 12 3-pointers, most in 4A.

Jack McCaffery, Iowa City West

McCaffery had a strong outing for the Trojans in the Class 4A substate finals on Tuesday, Feb. 27.

The 6-foot-8 forward scored a game-high 17 points. He also tallied a team-high eight rebounds and five assists to go along with his three blocks and two steals.

Anna Quillin, Solon

Quillin was a rebounding force for the Spartans in the Class 3A state tournament.

Quillin grabbed a team-high 16 rebounds in the Class 3A state title game. She also set a 3A tournament record with 40 rebounds and earned a spot in the 3A All-Tournament team.
