Statesman Journal sports reporter Jarrid Denney interviews Cascade's Kyler Hemelstrand following the OSAA Class 4A Boys Golf State Championship at Emerald Valley Golf Club in Creswell on May 14.

Jarrid Denney is the Statesman Journal's new high school sports reporter.

Denney will focus his coverage on teams from Salem-Keizer Public Schools as well as others in Marion and Polk counties. He will also cover some Oregon State sports.

"I couldn't be more thrilled to join the Statesman Journal and work alongside its incredibly talented group of reporters, editors and photographers," Denney said. "Throughout my career, I've been fortunate enough to report on Major League Baseball, Pac-12 football, and a variety of other topics. But local journalism holds a truly special place in my heart."

Denney fills the opening created when longtime sports reporter Pete Martini died in November 2023 after battling cancer.

Denney most recently worked for On3.com, where he covered Oregon Ducks football and men's basketball. He also has experience covering high school sports for The Register-Guard in Eugene and the Corvallis Gazette-Times, where he wrote an in-depth report on the decline in participation in high school football in Oregon.

Since he started in April, Denney has written features on the Dallas and Silverton softball rivalry, South Salem baseball's standout season and West Salem's Mihaly Akpamgbo winning back-to-back 200 meter state titles. He's also written about state golf, new and departing high school coaches, in addition to reporting on Oregon State baseball, football, the NFL draft and women's basketball.

Denney grew up in Cottage Grove and is a graduate of the University of Oregon School of Journalism and Communication.

He is looking forward to continue getting to know the Mid-Valley sports community.

"I'm excited to tell meaningful, impactful stories about the athletes who help shape the Salem and Oregon State communities," Denney said.
