Meet the 2023 All-Greater Rochester Girls Tennis Team
Here is the 2023 All-Greater Rochester Girls Tennis Team as determined by a vote of Section V coaches with input from Democrat and Chronicle staff.
Player of the Year
Year: Junior
Parents: Anna and Samir Tozin
Position: First singles
Key accomplishment: Third place at the individual state tournament.
Future plans: Undecided.
Why she is Player of the Year: Leyla Tozin, already a two-time AGR Player of the Year, was without a doubt Section V's best tennis player in 2023. She defeated the reigning state champ for third place at the NYSPHSAA Championships, topping her fourth place finish in 2022. Not one local player player beat Tozin this fall. She won her first 20 matches, finished 21-1, and captured her fourth straight Section V singles championship.
Year: Sophomore
Parents: Rabia and Akbar Ahmed
Positiona: Third singles and first doubles
Key accomplishments: My undefeated regular season and making it to the states with my doubles partner.
Future plans: I want to continue playing tennis in college with a major in pre-med. I want to become either a heart surgeon or a trauma surgeon.
Year: Senior
Parents: Alison and Steven Carling
Position: First singles
Key accomplishments: Qualifying for both individual and team states.
Future plans: Continuing both my tennis and academic careers at Kenyon College.
Year: Junior
Parents: Mari and Charlie Fitzsimmons
Position: Third singles
Key accomplishment: Advancing to states with my partner Shushu.
Future plans: Undecided.
Year: Junior
Parents: Patty and Ed Hall
Position: Doubles
Key accomplishments: Winning both team and individual sectionals, and qualifying for states with my doubles partner.
Future plans: Hope to attend culinary school/college.
Year: Senior
Parents: Baasansuren Jadamba and Akhtar Khan
Position: First doubles
Key accomplishment: Competing at states with my doubles partner.
Future plans: I'm currently applying to colleges. I hope to double major in bioengineering and applied mathematics.
Year: Senior
Parents: Mijin and Moonsun Kim
Position: First singles
Key accomplishments: Getting the team sportsmanship and MVP awards.
Future plans: I’m currently applying to colleges, but I plan on studying biology or biochemistry in college.
Year: Junior
Parents: Tue and Ken Kotz
Position: First doubles
Key accomplishments: Won state qualifiers doubles tournament.
Future plans: Go to college.
Year: Senior
Parents: Tara and Chris Mariano
Position: Second singles
Key accomplishments: Undefeated regular season and placing second in individual sectionals with my sister Neila Mariano.
Future plans: I plan to attend college next year and play club tennis.
Year: Freshman
Parents: Sara and Christopher Miller
Position: First singles
Key accomplishments: Making it to the second round of state championships.
Future plans: Continue to work hard in school and tennis and possibly play Division I tennis.
Year: Sophomore
Parents: Pravina and Mehul Patel
Position: First singles
Key accomplishment: Winning individual sectionals for the second time in a row.
Future plans: I want to get into astrophysics. I’m not sure about college right now but I hope to play club tennis whenever I end up going.

Parents: Dianhong Li and Kean Wu
Position: Second singles
Key accomplishment: Going to states with my doubles partner Caroline Fitzsimmons.
Future plans: Go to college.

Profession: Fifth and sixth grade history teacher at The Harley School.
Varsity coaching experience: Girls varsity tennis, HAC, eight years.
Family: Partner Sejal Shah, parents Singa and Jambu Singaravelu.
Profession: Teacher assistant at Wellsville Secondary School
Varsity coaching experience: Wellsville boys 2005-present, Wellsville girls 2005- present
Family: Single, no children, nieces Madison Ewing and Kennedy Ewing.
