McKinley grad Andre Leavell leads high-scoring Coker basketball; Erin Wagner receives honor

Andre Leavell, a McKinley High graduate, is shooting lights out for South Carolina’s Coker University men’s basketball team.

The 6-foot-2, 175-pound junior guard leads the high-scoring Cobras with a 21.1 average 10 games into the season. He has hit 73 of 138 shots from the field (52.9%), including 11-of-28 3-pointers (39.3%). Coker averages 99.4 points a game and is 6-4 overall, including 2-1 in the South Atlantic Conference.

Leavell also leads the team in assists (44) and steals (23). He has scored double figures in nine of 10 games, including:

  • A season-high 32 in 27 minutes in a 104-79 loss to Southern Wesleyan,

  • 29 points in 29 minutes in a 111-106 victory over Livingstone,

  • 25 in both a 114-103 win over Emory & Henry on Dec. 2 and an 82-77 win over Tusculum on Dec. 9.

Leavell played at Ohio Valley University as a freshman and Arkansas Tech as a sophomore. He scored his 1,000th college career point on Nov. 15.

Anthony Mazzeo (Jackson)

The 6-3 guard, a graduate student, was named University Athletic Association Athlete of the Week last Monday for his play with the Case Western Reserve men’s basketball team. It's his second time receiving the honor. He is the leading scorer for the 8-0 Spartans, who are ranked eighth in Division III. Mazzeo scored 20 points in an 83-65 victory over Adrian on Dec. 9 and celebrated his latest honor with 19 points and six assists in a 104-95 win over Hiram last Monday night. He is scoring 17.9 a game and has hit 18 of 46 3-point attempts (39.1%). He also leads the team in assists with 30.

Nakayah Terrell (McKinley)

The 5-6 junior guard has started all 10 games for the High Point (N.C.) women’s basketball team (4-6). Terrell is second on the team in scoring with a 9.5 average. She scored a season-high 18 points in a 99-47 victory over Lees-McRae on Nov. 11. Named to the Big South Conference All-Freshman Team in her first season with the team, Terrell has played in 72 games with 53 starts in her career.

The graduate student kicked off her indoor track season with the Youngstown State women’s team by winning the 5,000 meters at the YSU Icebreaker on Dec. 1 in Youngstown. Her time was 17:25.10. Cole’s prior performance came in the Horizon League Outdoor Championship last May when she won the 5,000 i(17:23.74) and 10,000 (35:32.56). She was 3-for-3 in the league’s indoor championship last February, winning the mile, 3K and 5K races.

Reese Leone (West Branch)

The 5-10 senior guard has started all 10 games for the Westminster (Pa.) men’s basketball team (5-5, 3-4 Presidents’ Athletic Conference). Leone had 16 points, three rebounds and three assists in a 96-83 conference loss to Chatham on Dec. 9. He is second on the team in scoring (14.3) and has scored in double figures in nine straight games. He leads the team in assists with 46 and is second in steals with 15.

Ian Paul (Central Catholic)

The John Carroll sophomore, who didn’t compete in 2022, was named Ohio Athletic Conference Rookie of the Year in cross country after finishing 12th in the OAC championship with an 8K time of 25:22.5 and finishing 27th in the Division III Great Lakes Regionals with a personal-best 24:38.2. Paul is also a member of the Blue Streaks’ indoor and outdoor track teams. He hasn’t competed thus far, but ran the 500, 800, 1,000, mile and 3,000 last winter as a freshman.

Lily Mullens (Hoover)

The junior is having a solid season with the Roanoke (Va.) women’s swim team (4-1, 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference). Mullens earned ODAC Women’s Swimmer of the Week honors on Nov. 6 after a big effort in a 149-113 victory at Bridgewater on Nov. 4. She won the 50 free (24.47) and the 100 free (54.62). And she led off on the winning 200 medley relay (1:53.54) and 400 free relay (3:43.70).

Erin Wagner (Perry)

The Ohio Northern junior was named to the College Sports Communicators Division III All-District Academic team in women’s volleyball last Tuesday. She is a biology major. Prior to that, Wagner earned All-America honorable mention by the American Volleyball Coaches Association and was first-team All-Region 7 and first-team All-Ohio Athletic Conference. She led the 17-10 Polar Bears and the OAC in hitting percentage (.336) and had 360 kills and 71 total blocks.

JP Timken (Hoover)

The junior helped the Wooster women’s swim team finish second out of nine entrants in the Wooster Invitational to wrap up the first semester, Dec. 1-2. Timken won the 1,650 free in 17:48.03, the 10th-best time in program history. She also scored points by finishing ninth in the 500 free (5:18.26) and was a member of the 800 free relay which came in third (8:02.17).

Peyton Alazaus (West Branch)

The 5-10 senior is scoring 15.0 points per game to lead the Pitt-Johnstown women’s basketball team (5-2, 1-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference). She has hit 18 of 45 shots from 3-point range (40%). Alazaus had a season-high 22 points in an 81-60 victory over Salem (Va.) on Nov. 10 and scored 20 points in a 101-81 win over No. 18 Glenville State (W. Va.) on Nov. 27.

Alyssa Ziehler (Green)

The sophomore had her first double-double of the season with 16 points and 10 rebounds to help the Findlay women’s basketball team beat Ursuline 82-78 in a Great Midwest Athletic Conference on Dec. 9. The 6-0 forward is second on the Oilers (5-4, 1-2) in scoring with a 13.7 average and leads the team in rebounding (7.0) and steals (13) along with 18 assists. Ziehler has scored in double figures in eight of nine games.
