McClintock hires Dave Williams, who led Desert Vista to Open title, as girls basketball coach

Tempe McClintock High School has hired Dave Williams as its new girls basketball coach.

McClintock announced the hiring Wednesday, two months after he led the Desert Vista Thunder to its Open Division state title. Williams resigned from Desert Vista on April 24.

McClintocks' announcement about hiring Williams, who stays in the Tempe Union High School District, came a day after it was announced that former Mesa Desert Ridge coach Erin O'Bryan filled Desert Vista's vacancy.

On the same day Williams stepped down from Desert Vista, Sydnie Lengyel revealed on the McClintock team Twitter account that she stepped down to focus on her second pregnancy.

McClintock cited Williams track record in announcing the hiring.

“Coach Williams has a long track record of developing players and teams who compete at the highestlevels,” McClintock's athletic principal Jermaine Whitaker said in a press release. “We had a great run last year and we’re looking forward to continuing building on that success.”

McClintock had one of it's most successful seasons in program history last season. It finished on a 25-3 record, had one of The Republic's Elite 50 player poll selections and the state's third-best scorer in sophomore Aiyanna Perkins (23.6 points per game), and had Open Division quarterfinals appearance before the team was eliminated by Phoenix Xavier Prep.

“I’m excited to join the Chargers and get to work,” Williams said. “They have a long history of traditionand success. I’m looking forward to working with a team that has experienced success and is hungry formore.”
