Mathew Blake and Isabella Johnson headline All-Area boys and girls track team back-to-back years

The Montgomery Advertiser continues its tradition of highlighting the best high school athletes in the area. It’s something readers look forward to seeing all season.

Here are the boys and girls track and field All-Area teams and athletes of the year for 2024:

Boys

Track and field athlete of the year: Mathew Blake

Trinity Presbyterian

Events: 400 meters, 800 meters, 4x800, 4x400 relay

Why chosen: For the second straight year, Blake is named the boys Track and Field Athlete of the Year. He finished as an individual state champion in the 800 meters with a time of 1:54.21 and 1,600 with a time of 4:32.62.

Skyler Stovall

Montgomery Academy

Events: High jump

Why Chosen: Captured the high jump state championship with a 6-foot, 6-inch leap.

Laquenton Underwood

Carver

Events: 100 meters

Why Chosen: Finished third in the 100 during the state championships with a time of 10.76.

Kevin Honer

Brewbaker Tech

Events: Triple jump

Why Chosen: Finished second at the state championships in triple jump with a distance of 44-7.

Julian Fenderson

Brewbaker Tech

Events: 100 meters

Why Chosen: Finished second at the state championships with a time of 10.86

Ari Bowman

Alabama Christian

Events: 400 meters

Why Chosen: Finished third with a time of 50.12 during states.

Kyle Boice

Billingsley

Events: Long jump

Why Chosen: Finished third in the state, recording a 20-2.

Relays

Montgomery Academy

Events: 4x100, 4x400

Why chosen: The 4x400 relay team finished third at state with a time of 3:30.59. The 4x100 team finished in fourth place.

Coach of the year: Ethan McBride, Montgomery Academy

Why Chosen: Montgomery Academy finished up the 2024 track and field season with a fifth-place finish for the girls and boys Class 1A-3A team during state.

Girls

Track and field athlete of the year: Isabella Johnson

Montgomery Academy

Events: Shot put, discus

Why chosen: For the second straight season, Johnson is the girls track and field athlete of the year. During the state championship meet, she placed in top three in all three field events. She won the state championship in shot put, recording a 40-1/2. In discus she placed second at 125-9. In javelin throw she placed third with a 112-foot heave.

Elle Ingram

Montgomery Academy

Events: 800 meters, 1,600 meters, 3,200 meters

Why chosen: Ingram finished fourth in the 3,200 and fifth in the 1,600 during state.

Somer Rone

Park Crossing

Events: 100 meters and 200 meters

Why Chosen: Rone placed first in the 100 with a time of 12.01 during state. In the 200, she finished at 24.62.

Haylei Mason

Montgomery Catholic

Events: 100 meter hurdles

Why Chosen: Mason finished first at state in 15.07.

Ally Orr

Elmore County

Events: Javelin

Why Chosen: Orr placed second with a 124-11 javelin throw during state.

Tamera Campbell

Brewbaker Tech

Events: Long jump

Why Chosen: Campbell finished third in long jump with a leap of 16-6 3/4.

Events: 100 meters

Why Chosen: Finished second with a time of 13.02 at state.
