MarShawn Lloyd gets an upgrade at QB and offensive play-caller
The USC Trojans’ running back room is a crowded place. This is true even with the departure of Travis Dye, who left for the NFL. Enter South Carolina transfer MarShawn Lloyd, who has everybody raving about his talent and potential.
Jack Follman of SuperWest Sports has Lloyd ranked as the fifth-best running back in the Pac-12, with the top four being Damien Martinez, Bucky Irving, Jadyn Ott, and Michael Wiley, respectively.
“The South Carolina transfer should slide in well for the departing Travis Dye and maybe be more dangerous,” Follman wrote. “He had more than 700 yards rushing and receiving and 11 touchdowns last year.”
MarShawn Lloyd might have to share carries with the other members of the USC running back room. He will obviously have to be patient in an offense where Caleb Williams will have the ball a lot. However, when Lloyd does get the ball, USC’s abundance of weapons will make it hard for defenses to focus on stopping Lloyd specifically. He could have a very high yards-per-carry average due to the balance of the USC offense under Lincoln Riley.
Lloyd gets a much better quarterback and offensive play-caller than he had at South Carolina. Those realities can work to his advantage, even though his number of carries might not be especially large.
