Marquette and Wisconsin are playing volleyball at Fiserv Forum on Wednesday. Here's what you need to know.

Fiserv Forum will play host to a huge nonconference battle at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Don't be confused, because college basketball season is still a few months away.

Marquette and Wisconsin will meet in the first volleyball match at the arena, an event that has been highly anticipated since it was announced last December.

Here's what you need to know:

Where are Wisconsin and Marquette ranked in volleyball?

Both teams came into the season with high expectations and challenged themselves with tough nonconference slates.

UW has ascended to No. 1 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association poll after winning its first seven matches, including two five-set thrillers.

MU started out No. 12 in its highest-ever preseason ranking but has fallen out of the top 25 with a 2-5 start.

Is the match sold out?

Not quite. As of mid-morning Tuesday, there were just over 100 tickets left in the upper bowl at Fiserv Forum.

That's a big crowd for a volleyball match. Will it be a record?

The regular-season indoor record looks like it will fall. A sellout for MU basketball games at Fiserv Forum is just over 17,500 (not counting standing-room only tickets), and the school said the capacity for the volleyball match would be 18,215.

UW set the indoor record for volleyball last season by drawing 16,833 fans to its match against Florida at the Kohl Center.

The overall record for a volleyball match will be nearly impossible to top. Last month, Nebraska packed in 92,003 fans to its outdoor football stadium, the largest crowd to ever witness a women's sporting event.

Will the Wisconsin-Marquette volleyball match be on TV?

Yes, it will be televised by Fox Sports 1 with Bob Brainerd and Anna Connelly on the call.

What players do we need to know?

The Badgers are imposing with 6-foot-9 Anna Smrek and 6-7 Carter Booth and the power of 6-2 Devyn Robinson.

The Golden Eagles will try to counter that size with the speed of its attack, with reigning Big East setter of the year Yadhira Anchante passing to hitters such as Hattie Bray and Aubrey Hamilton.

What about the coaches?

Both UW's Kelly Sheffield and MU's Ryan Theis are among the most respected tacticians in college volleyball.

Sheffield led the Badgers to the national title in 2021. Theis has gotten the Golden Eagles to two Sweet 16s in the NCAA tournament, including last season.

The coaches are friends and have competed against each other for a long time, including back when Sheffield was at Dayton and Theis at Ohio.
