Marion Local's Griffin Bruns goes viral for sprint from outfield to tag out runner at home

It's extraordinarily rare to see an outfielder tag out a runner sliding into home. For that reason, Marion Local baseball player Griffin Bruns went viral over the weekend, despite his team losing in the playoffs, 11-3 to Fort Recovery.

It happened Friday during the district championship game. Caden Grisez blooped the ball into the outfield, where it landed between a charging Bruns and his teammates at shortstop and second base.

That left second base uncovered. Grisez noticed and started sprinting for a double. Grisez's hustle forced the Flyers third baseman to try to man second, but he was too late. Of course, this left third base uncovered, and Grisez continued to run.

Marion Local's catcher was too slow to reach third and apply a tag there, and with him no longer behind the plate, Grisez took off again.

Bruns' only option was to rely on his considerable speed.

He lunged and hit the ground around the same time Grisez started his headfirst slide. The umpire waited for the dust to clear before dramatically signaling out.

Officially, the play was scored a triple and an 8-unassisted putout.

Unofficially, it was a chance for Grisez to demonstrate his sense of humor, which was perhaps easier because, as MLB.com notes, he still went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a run scored and pitched 5 ⅓ innings with seven strikeouts. On top of that, Fort Recovery advanced to the Division 4 regional semifinals with its victory.
