Manu Ginobili, Lindsay Whalen lead 11 Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame finalists
Tim Duncan was an obvious choice for first-ballot Hall of Fame honors. Will one of his longtime teammates join him?
That's one of the big questions left after the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced a group of 11 finalists for enshrinement in the Class of 2022, headlined by former San Antonio Spurs star Manu Ginobili.
Here's the full group in alphabetical order, with a quick resume for each:
Leta Andrews (all-time winningest high school basketball coach)
Swin Cash (four-time WNBA All-Star, three-time WNBA champion, two-time Olympic gold medalist)
Michael Cooper (five-time NBA champion, five-time first-team All-Defense)
Hugh Evans (longtime NBA referee)
Manu Ginobili (four-time NBA champion, two-time All-Star, 2004 Olympic gold medalist)
Tim Hardaway (five-time NBA All-Star)
Bob Huggins (two-time NCAA national coach of the year)
Marques Johnson (five-time NBA All-Star, 1977 NCAA national player of the year, 1975 NCAA champion)
George Karl (NBA's sixth all-time winningest coach, 2013 NBA coach of the year)
Marianne Stanley (three-time AIAW champion, 2002 WNBA coach of the year)
Lindsay Whalen (four-time WNBA champion, five-time All-Star, two-time Olympic gold medalist)
Ginobili and Whalen are the only members of that group as first-time finalists. Whalen, in particular, may have the best chance of anyone as a member of the WNBA's 25th Anniversary Team and a list of achievements that goes well beyond what is listed above.
The entire Class of 2022 will be announced on April 2 at the NCAA men's Final Four in New Orleans. In addition to the group above being considered, the Direct Elect Committees for Early African-American Pioneers, International, Contributors, Veterans and Women Veterans also have yet to make their selections.
Enshrinement remains scheduled for Sept. 9-10 at the Hall of Fame in Springfield, Massachusetts.
