Manny Pacquiao, Yordenis Ugas make weight for fight on Saturday
Manny Pacquiao and Yordenis Ugas on Friday cleared the final hurdle before they meet in the ring Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (pay per view).
Pacquiao and Ugas, the WBA 147-pound titleholder, weighed in at 146 and 147, respectively.
The Filipino icon held the WBA title until the sanctioning body designated him “champion in recess” because of his inactivity, at which time Ugas was elevated to full champ.
There will be no confusion about who has the rightful claim on the belt unless something unforeseen happens on Saturday.
“I have a lot of respect for him so I’ve very excited,” Ugas said through a translator after the weigh-in. “But all respect is finished when we get into the ring tomorrow. … I’m definitely very emotional, very excited about this opportunity.
“I have the belt. Whoever wins tomorrow gets the belt, but right now I’m the champion, and I’m ready.”
Ugas (24-0, 12 KOs) took the fight on 11 days notice after Errol Spence Jr. pulled out with an eye injury. Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KOs) says he’s expecting a tough fight.
“I’m not taking this fight lightly,” Pacquiao said. “Of course, I don’t want to be overconfident for this fight. I want to make sure tomorrow I get the victory. And God willing the fans will be happy.”
The weigh-in results of preliminary bout are as follows:
Victor Ortiz came in a pound over the 147-pound limit for his scheduled 10-rond welterweight fight against Robert Guerrero, who weighed 146.75.
Mark Magsayo and Julio Ceja came in a 125.5 and 125, respectively, for their scheduled 12-round featherweight bout.
And featherweights Oscar Escandon and Carlos Castro weighed 125.75 and 125.5 for their scheduled 10-rounder.
