Manning, Giants QBs Struggle In Sweltering Sunday Practice

Sunday’s practice for the New York Giants’ quarterbacks was summed up by Eli Manning shaking his head in disgust after a pass sailed past a wide receiver.

It was one of those days for Big Blue’s signal callers.

It’s unknown whether it was the mid-August heat with temperatures in the 90s with a heat index of 105, an occasional gust of tropical wind, or if the Giants defense is starting to come together as a unit but the quarterbacks have definitely had better days.

Manning did not play in the Giants’ 27-10 preseason opening loss to the Miami Dolphins. On Sunday, he threw an interception of when a pass was caught in the muggy wind and wobbled toward the left sideline into the awaiting hands of cornerback Janoris Jenkins.

Backup Ryan Nassib started against the Dolphins. In spite of lighting it up with the Giants’ first team, he finished the game with two interceptions and a lost fumble. During Sunday’s practice, Nassib struggled mightily as he underthrew wide receiver Roger Lewis on one play, held the ball for too long on another and made matters worse by scrambling outside of the pocket and throwing the ball after crossing the line of scrimmage.

Third-string quarterback Logan Thomas, who lost a fumble during Friday night’s game, didn’t exactly light it up at practice Sunday either.

These kind of days in training camp are bound to happen. It is a grind and the tropical heat in East Rutherford, N.J. certainly did not help matters. In addition, it is a positive that the Giants’ defense is beginning to gel. Evidence of this was the way they manhandled and harassed the Dolphins’ first team offense in the preseason opener.

Everything was not bad for Manning, who is overall having a very strong training camp. Even though he threw an interception, it was only his second interception of training camp. The first interception was on his first attempt of training camp back on July 29.

He continues to build rapport with his top offensive weapon, Odell Beckham, Jr. Beckham has been lighting training camp up as the Giants’ secondary has shown an inability to cover him.

Manning found Beckham in the corner of the end zone twice, although one of those was an overthrown pass that was intended for tight end Will Dye. He also hit tight end Larry Donnell for a touchdown in a no-huddle drill.

Nassib, who had attempted 10 passes in three years with the Giants, had a bad night on Friday and a subpar practice on Sunday but Giants head coach Ben McAdoo doesn’t seem overly concerned.

“Ryan is going to bounce back,” McAdoo said. “He’s a pro. He’s a guy that’s going to come in, he’s going to prepare, he’s going about his business the right way, and attack practice the same way he always has.”
