Manchester United were eliminated from the Champions League on Tuesday after a 1-0 loss at home to Bayern Munich.
Kingsley Coman scored in the 70t minute at Old Trafford to end the three-time European Cup winners' slim chances of advancing to the knockout stage on an evening where Erik ten Hag's side just never got going.
A 12th defeat of the season in all competitions meant United could not even secure the safety net of a place in the Europa League after finishing bottom of Group A. Copenhagen advanced to the round of 16 behind group winner Bayern after beating Galatasaray 1-0 on the same evening.
That result meant even a United win would not have seen it advance to the next stage. And an embarrassingly early exit is the latest setback in a troubled campaign for their manager.
Injuries to Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw added to his concerns ahead of Sunday's Premier League game away at leaders Liverpool.

United went into Tuesday night’s final round of Champions League fixtures needing a minor miracle to reach the last-16, but a 1-0 defeat at home to Bayern Munich ensured they finish bottom of Group A and therefore do not even get the consolation of dropping into the Europa League in the New Year.

Sat bottom of it after accounting for almost all of said chaos, with only a win and four points to their name, Manchester United ought really to have been dead and buried long before, kept alive only by Bayern Munich’s dominance in strolling into the last-16 as the pool’s comprehensive winners.
On closing night at Old Trafford, though, there was little between two of Europe’s most storied clubs, Bayern at full-strength but only half-throttle, United a more intense force than that thrashed by Bournemouth, but ultimately not nearly good enough to inspire true belief in a miracle, and finally put out of their misery by Kingsley Coman’s winner 20 minutes from time.
