Man City won the title without playing, but single league format is still better than play-offs

When Manchester City won the Premier League for the third time over the weekend, captain and leader Vincent Kompany wasn’t on the field. He was in the pub with several of his teammates, who had the day off.

For the second time in three years—and the fifth time in the 26-year of the Premier League—the champion has been crowned without kicking a ball. This kind of anti-climactic denouement to the title race does not speak positively to the format of a single table league.

After all, in a league system with a post-season, like MLS, we are guaranteed fireworks and a dramatic trophy presentation on the final day. It’s an awful lot of fun!

However, in the vast majority of cases, a single table league system is far superior to the play-off format.
