Male sprinters warm to the occasion in Section 4 State Track & Field Qualifier

Leading track & field athletes completed a toasty two-day grind Thursday in Section 4’s State Qualifier at Union-Endicott.

The aim for all was to secure a start in the June 9-10 state championships at Middletown High School.

On the boys side, it was a highly impressive 1-2 showing by Waverly in the 100-meter dash, with Kayleb Bechy running 10.79 to Ralph Johnson’s 10.85. Also on the sprint front, Johnson City’s Dayzin Legare blazed to a 21.52 in the 200, perhaps positioning himself for a little something special next time out. He’ll likewise will be off to states to compete in the 100.

Ashton Bange of Corning would appear to be rounding nicely into form following a first-place 4:19.86 in the 1,600. Teammate Gabe Cornfield’s 9:38.79 was good for a top finish in the 3,000 steeplechase.

The Hawks were tops in the 1,600 and 3,200 relays, with Waverly’s sprinting strength showing with a first-place 42.3 in the 400.

Emerson Carter of South Kortright handled larger-school competitors with a winning 9:34.12 in the 3,200.

Most well-rounded of the bunch? Horseheads’ Noah Ruffer with a top finish in the pentathlon (3,061 points).

The first-place finisher in each individual event and relay from Division I and Division II advance to states. A section may send another athlete or relay team, provided they are the highest-placing finisher at the State Qualifier that has met a designated time or distance standard.
