On Ohio State football

To the editor: Coach Ryan Day has proved adept in changing or adding assistant coaching staff to fill perceived gaps in making the Buckeyes better. May I suggest adding coaches Tressel and Meyer for the sole purpose of helping coach up the youthful silver bullets to beat the team up north. Day could use the fortification to stop his losing streak and I am sure Urban and Jim would work for free and do it as a labor of love. Can you imagine the vest, the volcano and the cerebral all together on one sideline? What a sight that would be. The Wolverines would never know what hit them.

Michael Oser, Columbus

To Michael: That would be a sideshow "Who's in charge" circus that would eventually get them all fired. Might as well add Deion Sanders to the staff, too. And you think Meyer would work for free?

On Satchel Paige

To Brian: Last Sunday's photo of Guardians' pitcher, Triston McKenzie (6-5, 165 pounds) reminded me of Satchel Paige (6-3, 180), who pitched for Cleveland in 1948. Paige's original name was Page, later changed by his parents to give it a more distinguished character. The nickname "Satchel" (for Leroy Robert) referenced his job as a youth carrying travel bags in a railway station. He helped Cleveland win the World Series over the Boston Braves at age 42, his first year in the major leagues. His salary was $40,000. He finished his career with Kansas City at age 59, still a record. "Age is a question of mind over matter," remarked Paige. "If you don't mind, it doesn't matter."

Ohio State football: Oller: Enough is enough. Keep OSU-Michigan where it is on schedule

On Tennessee Volunteers football

To the editor: When Tennessee gave Jeremy Pruitt his first chance to be a head coach, he thought it would be a good idea to pay players under the table. Even his wife seems to have been involved. He has now paid the price as well as all the coaches and university without the current players and coaches who were uninvolved being penalized. Good for them and good luck Vols on Nov. 18 when the Dawgs come to town.
