Magic Johnson breaks silence on point guard discussion

This offseason, Steph Curry sparked debate when he jokingly referred to himself as the greatest point guard of all time over Magic Johnson. Multiple current and former NBA players weighed in on the discussion, with some choosing the Golden State Warriors guard and others opting for the Los Angeles Lakers legend.

However, Johnson had remained quiet on the subject until a recent appearance on “The Zach Gelb Show.” Johnson listed his career achievements to stake his claim to the title of the greatest-ever point guard, making a compelling case in the process.

“Do the numbers say that? If he’s got more than five championships,” Johnson said. “If he’s got more than three finals MVP’s and three league MVP’s, then he’s the greatest. If he got more than number one in assists, all time in the finals, number two in double-double’s, number one in triple-doubles. All time in the NBA playoffs. Number one in steals in the NBA playoffs. If he’s got more than those numbers, he’s the best…the last time I checked, he doesn’t. But, everybody has to decide for themselves who the best is”

Regardless of whether Curry or Johnson sits atop the point guard pyramid, both profoundly changed the NBA and the way basketball is played around the world. Curry has been the catalyst for teams to embrace the 3-point movement and is the greatest shooter in basketball history.

Regardless of who you believe is the best guard in history, the debate provided some fun offseason content. It’s only fitting Johnson staked his claim before the new season.
