A&M-Commerce sweeps LCU in LSC doubleheader

Avery Boley hit a go-ahead two-run homer in a six-run seventh inning and No. 21 Texas A&M-Commerce rallied past No. 10 Lubbock Christian University 9-6 in the opener of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader Friday at LCU's PlainsCapital Park.

The Lions completed the sweep with a 6-3 victory as Alyssa LeBlanc hit two of the team's four home runs in the second game.

LCU (25-5, 11-3) and A&M-Commerce (28-6, 13-1) started the day in a three-way tie for first in the LSC with top-ranked UT Tyler (25-1, 11-1).

LCU hosts UT Tyler in a doubleheader at noon Sunday.

Kasey Flores' grand slam gave LCU (25-4, 11-2) a 6-3 lead in the fifth inning of the opener, and the score stayed that way until A&M-Commerce (27-6, 12-1) came back in the seventh. A double, a walk and two errors on a subsequent sacrifice bunt narrowed the gap to 6-5.

LeBlanc tied it with a one-out single before Boley homered to center field, making it 8-6. With two outs, Sabrina Anguiano added a solo homer.

LCU pitcher Taylor Franco struck out 10 in six innings and was lifted after she allowed a leadoff double in the seventh. Maxine Valdez (7-2) was charged with five runs on three hits and a walk in two-thirds of an inning. Three of the runs were unearned.

Madison Schaefer hit a three-run homer in the first inning for A&M-Commerce. LCU chipped away with Savannah Wysocki hitting a sacrifice fly in the third inning and Tyla Lee a run-scoring double in the fourth.

In the second game, LeBlanc hit a two-run homer in the first and a solo shot in the seventh. The Lions also got a solo homer from Samantha Dutton and a two-run drive from Uxua Modrego.

Kamryn Gibbs homered for LCU. Lady Chaps starter Mattye Tyler (5-1) took the loss, giving up six runs on six hits over 4 2/3 innings. Two of the runs were unearned.
