Lyn-J Dixon, ex-Clemson running back, no longer with Tennessee 18 days after transferring

Running back Lyn-J Dixon is no longer with the Tennessee football program only 18 days after joining the team, a UT spokesman confirmed Sunday.

His time with the Vols was short.

Dixon spent four seasons at Clemson, rushing for 1,420 yards and 13 TDs. He transferred to West Virginia in November, re-entered the transfer portal in June and announced his transfer to UT on Aug. 3.

Dixon was added after UT lost Len'Neth Whitehead to a season-ending injury suffered before preseason practice.

Now the Vols have only four scholarship running backs on the roster as they begin preparation for the season opener against Ball State on Sept. 1 (7 p.m., SEC Network).

Dixon didn't make headway in his short stint at UT. And coaches said his opportunity for playing time could come later in the season, once he learned the playbook and adjusted to the offense's up-tempo style.

Dixon started practice on Aug. 4 after the other running backs were already a few days into the preseason. And last week, he was limited by an ankle injury.

Jabari Small returns as UT's starting running back after rushing for 792 yards and nine TDs last season. Jaylen Wright, who rushed for 409 yards and four TDs, recently returned to full strength after suffering a minor injury.

Freshmen Justin Williams-Thomas and Dylan Sampson have impressed coaches, putting them ahead of Dixon in the rotation.
