Who should be the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal's Athlete of the Week?

Athletes from basketball and football turned in stellar performances last week and are are among the finalists for Lone Star Varsity Athlete of the Week.

Coaches can nominate student-athletes in all varsity sports by sending an email by noon Sunday to sports@lubbockonline.com. Please include: name, grade, pertinent stats and use the subject head: "Athlete of the Week nomination" to ensure it's seen.

The poll opens Monday morning and will close at noon Thursday, with the winners announced Friday each week.

Female athletes

Peyton North, Sr., Lubbock-Cooper — Scored 25 points to lead the No 8 Lady Pirates to a win over No. 1 Monterey in District 4-4A play.

Madi Chavez, Soph., Whitharral — Poured in a game-best 26 points to go with six rebounds, four assists and two steals in a win over Meadow last Friday.

Sydney Roberts, Jr., Denver City — Ended her night with 15 points, six assists, six rebounds and five steals in a district road win over Dimmitt.

Male athletes

Tyler Williams, Sr., Coronado — Tallied a team-best 20 points to power the Mustangs to a nondistrict win over Abernathy last Friday.

Abran Castillo, Sr., Floydada — Netted a game-best 33 points to help propel the Whirlwinds to a win over Bovina.

Taeshaun Jones, Sr., Levelland — Scored 18 points, which included making 7-of-9 free throws, to help the Lobos down Denver City last Friday.
