LSU Softball walked off by Missouri, eliminated from SEC Tournament in Semifinals

For the second time in three days, seven innings wasn't enough for LSU softball. This time, though, it was LSU's opponent that recorded the walk-off.

Two days after a 14-inning marathon against Alabama, LSU needed extra innings against Missouri in the semifinal on Friday.

Mizzou took the lead in the bottom of the third on a solo home run, but LSU battled back and scored the tying run in the top of the fifth. After a seventh inning in which both teams produced baserunners and failed to score, the game went to extras.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Missouri (43-14) finally broke through, walking off LSU (40-15) on a sacrifice fly to win, 2-1.

Weather impacts again

The skies were clear on Friday, but the weather still impacted the game between LSU and Missouri. Mizzou started its quarterfinal game Thursday night, but when lightning struck in the area of the stadium in the fifth inning, the game had to be suspended. Missouri was forced to play the remainder of the game Friday morning, which contributed to a slow start against LSU.

Berzon back out

For the third time in as many days, Sydney Berzon made an appearance for LSU. Despite throwing over 16 innings over her last two games already and despite receiving little to no rest so far in the tournament, Berzon pitched well once again. In her third appearance of the tournament, Berzon threw 43 pitches in 3 ⅓ innings with four strikeouts, but allowed the game-losing run for her first run allowed since the first inning on Wednesday.

Crucial baserunning miscue in late innings

In the top of the seventh inning, and with the score tied at 1, LSU had a chance at a rally. Karli Petty drew a two-out walk to keep the inning alive. With Sierra Daniel at bat and Ciara Briggs on deck — both of whom had two hits already — this was a prime opportunity to take the lead for good. Initially, it looked as if LSU had chance to break the tie, as Daniel singled into left field. However, Petty was ruled to have left first base early, resulting in the third out.
