LSU softball falls 8-0 to Stanford in super regional final: Updates, highlights from season-ending loss

Hope sprung eternal for LSU when the Tigers defeated Stanford 11-1 via run rule Friday night, but the Cardinal sealed their trip to Oklahoma City Sunday with an 8-0 run rule win of its own to win the Stanford Super Regional.

Stanford didn't give up a run over the course of Game 2 and 3 on Saturday and Sunday, winning 3-0 in Game 2. In the rubber match Sunday, a seven-run fifth inning was the precursor to Kaitlyn Kim homering to lead off the sixth, ending the game in "walk-off" fashion.

NiJaree Canady threw her second complete game in as many days, going six innings and allowing no runs on three hits and a walk. She struck out three in her outing. Sydney Berzon went 4 2/3 innings and allowed nine runs on six hits, despite a strong first four frames.

Stanford now moves on to take on No. 1 Texas in the Women's College World Series, as LSU comes up just short of its first WCWS appearance since 2017.

Final score: Stanford 8, LSU 0

Sixth inning: Stanford 8, LSU 0

10:25 p.m.: Stanford "walks it off" in a sense as Lim homers, ending the game and LSU's season. Stanford advances to the WCWS by rune rule.

10:23 p.m.: Gutierrez lines out, and the Tigers will have just one more frame to make up seven runs if Stanford doesn't end the game in the bottom of the sixth.

10:22 p.m.: Lynch now goes down looking, bringing up Gutierrez with two outs.

10:19 p.m.: Briggs grounds out to short to start the sixth here, as LSU looks for a spark to claw its way back in. Lynch now comes up. She was a key part of LSU's massive fourth inning on Friday.

Fifth inning: Stanford 7, LSU 0

10:16 p.m.: After a hit, LSU finally gets out of the inning. But a ton of damage done there for Stanford.

10:14 p.m.: Berry breaks the game wide open with a three-run homer to center. LSU goes down 7-0, and we are now firmly within run rule territory.

10:10 p.m.: Yet another single, this time from Koch, plates another run. The hits keep coming.

10:08 p.m.: Another single drives the Stanford lead to three, as the Cardinal continues to hurt LSU in station to station ball.

10:05 p.m.: Stanford singles to plate its second run, which LSU can't throw out at home this time. Cardinal lead 2-0.

10:04 p.m.: Some good defense being played by LSU, as the Tigers throw out another runner at home on the fielder's choice.

10:01 p.m.: Kern singles for Stanford, but Briggs throws out the Cardinal runner at home to preserve a run. Stanford still with runners at second and third with one out, as the runners advanced on the throw.

9:59 p.m.: Stanford offense starting to get going, as Kim singles to put runners on first and second with no outs for the Cardinal.

9:57 p.m.: Stanford scores its first run on an RBI fielder's choice on a groundball to Gutierrez at second base. Gutierrez fired home, but Mahler beat the throw at the plate.

9:55 p.m.: Stanford leads off the bottom of the fifth with a triple, as Redoutey dives in right field but falls short, allowing the ball to roll past her. Cardinal with a chance to get on the board here.

9:52 p.m.: After review, the call stands. Tough break for the Tigers.

9:51 p.m.: Worst-case scenario ensues for LSU. Redoutey flies out to left field, then Bedell gets thrown out at home attempting to tag up on the out. Tigers can't capitalize on the scoring chance.

9:49 p.m.: Canady starting to fall apart, as Petty gets hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Tigers. LSU offense in business here with leadoff hitter Redoutey up to bat.

9:48 p.m.: Stanford starting to warmup pitcher Regan Krause.

9:48 p.m.: Great at-bat from Manning, who draws the walk after battling in a full count. LSU cooking with runners on first and second with one out in the fifth inning.

9:44 p.m.: Jinxing works, apparently. Bergeron doubles on the next at-bat to give the Tigers a runner in scoring position with less than two outs.

9:43 p.m.: LSU hitters attacking early in the count but haven't quite found success off Canady just yet. In the Tigers' defense, not many have this season on the Stanford ace.

Fourth inning: LSU 0, Stanford 0

9:38 p.m.: What a throw by Redoutey, who throws out Stanford's Caelan Koch at home to end the inning. That run could play a big difference later on.

9:36 p.m.: Berzon allows a double to right with two outs in the fourth.

9:30 p.m.: Really short inning for the Tigers, who are retired in order on two fly outs and a ground out by Lynch, Gutierrez and Newland. Berzon headed back out for the bottom half of the fourth.

Third inning: LSU 0, Stanford 0

9:26 p.m.: Error doesn't result in any damage, as Berzon gets out of the frame on another groundout. Tigers needing to get their bats going.

9:22 p.m.: Berzon gets another groundball, however, Pleasants' error leads to Stanford getting a baserunner.

9:21 p.m.: Berzon gets two quick outs on a groundout and a flyout to kick off the bottom of the third.

9:17 p.m.: LSU going to need a strong performance from Berzon to match Canady.

9:11 p.m.: Manning manages to get to second base after a single to right field, but Canady works around the hit to shut the door on the Tigers in the third.

Second inning: LSU 0, Stanford 0

9:05 p.m.: Grand opening grand closing. A popout to short ends the threat, and we're scoreless heading into the third.

9:04 p.m.: Runner advances on a groundout, so with a runner on third and two out, we have a high-leverage at-bat coming up.

9:02 p.m.: After forcing a quick out, Koch doubles off of Berzon to get Stanford rolling.

8:58 p.m.: Bergeron pops out to the end the inning, a clean one for Canady.

8:56 p.m.: Pleasants goes down looking as well, swung just once in the five-pitch AB.

8:55 p.m.: Epic at-bat between Newland and Canady, but it ultimately ends in a backwards K for Newland. She took some really tight pitches to work the count full, but Canady ultimately gets the upper hand after nine-pitch at-bat.

First inning: LSU 0, Stanford 0

8:49 p.m.: And Gall goes down looking. Easy inning for Berzon.

8:48 p.m.: After going down 0-2 Chan pops out to second. Berzon immediately goes up 0-2 to Gall in the next AB.

8:46 p.m.: Berzon quickly strikes Kern out looking to log the first out for LSU. Tigers are looking to their ace for another strong start.

8:42 p.m.: LSU's inning is over after back-to-back flyouts by Lynch and Gutierrez. Tigers taking the field now.

8:41 p.m.: After Redoutey's leadoff fly out, Briggs gets a single to earn LSU its first baserunner.

8:36 p.m.: Note: LSU-Stanford is only available on the ESPN app, as Texas-Texas A&M is still in the sixth inning on ESPN2.
