Louisville coach Scott Satterfield apologizes for rumors about South Carolina job

Louisville coach Scott Satterfield again apologized to Cardinals fans in a letter on Thursday night for his role in rumors about him wanting to take the vacant South Carolina job last week.

Satterfield — who said he had a “conversation” with South Carolina officials about their open head coaching job — insists that he was never really interested.

“Card Nation, I am sorry,” he wrote on Thursday. “I should have communicated my commitment to you and to our program with clarity, and better conveyed my confidence that this is the place for me and for my family … I own my mistakes and I am asking today for your forgiveness.”

South Carolina fired coach Will Muschamp last month, and eventually hired Oklahoma assistant Shane Beamer — the son of Hall of Famer Frank Beamer — to replace him.

Satterfield is in his second season at Louisville, though has gone just 11-12 headed into their final game of the season against Wake Forest on Saturday. As he’s from North Carolina, and his parents live just two hours from Columbia, South Carolina, Satterfield said he felt the need to at least speak with the Gamecocks.

"I think, again, my intentions were never to leave or go anywhere else, but I thought I owed an obligation just to listen because of where it’s at. That’s it," Satterfield told the Louisville Courier Journal last week. "Nothing else to read into that. I had no intention of entertaining it, I just wanted to listen to see what they had to say. That’s the bottom line. I don’t want it to offend anyone. We are committed to this program."

Naturally, though, his comments about that “conversation” spiraled into rumors that he was trying to leave Louisville.

“Words are important, but actions speak louder,” Satterfield wrote in the letter. “In the days, weeks and months ahead I will do what is necessary to earn back the trust and support of each and every one of you. Today, and each day forward, I am proud to ‘give my all for the ’Ville.’”
