South Carolina hires Shane Beamer as next head coach

South Carolina has found Will Muschamp’s replacement.

The school announced Sunday that it had hired Shane Beamer as its next head coach. Beamer is the son of longtime Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer.

"I have been preparing for this moment my entire life," Beamer said in a statement. "I am ready and excited to be the head football coach at the University of South Carolina. I am thankful to all the head coaches that I have worked for, the assistant coaches and student-athletes I have worked with. My family and I are thrilled to be coming back to Columbia and the state of South Carolina.”

Beamer, 43, is Oklahoma’s assistant offensive head coach and tight ends coach. He’s been with the Sooners since the 2018 season and is also the team’s special teams coordinator.

Before coming to Oklahoma, Beamer was an assistant at Georgia in 2016 and 2017 and coached the Bulldogs’ special teams and tight ends.

Beamer was the associate head coach at Virginia Tech from 2011-15 under his father. The Hokies were 40-26 in those five seasons ahead of Frank Beamer’s retirement from the school. Frank Beamer was replaced by Justin Fuente after the 2015 season.

Before he coached at Virginia Tech Beamer was an assistant with the Gamecocks for four seasons.

"I believe that Shane Beamer is the perfect fit to be the head football coach at the University of South Carolina," athletic director Ray Tanner said. "He has worked under some of the greatest coaches in college football and has taken those lessons to become one of the bright, young minds in the game. I believe Shane's energy, enthusiasm, commitment and fondness for our school and program will be met favorably by our student-athletes, staff and fans."

Beamer’s hiring comes after South Carolina fired Muschamp following a loss to Ole Miss. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo has served as the team’s interim coach for the three games after Muschamp’s firing. That included Saturday night’s 41-18 loss to Kentucky. That defeat means South Carolina finishes the season at 2-8.

The news that Beamer is South Carolina’s pick comes on the same day that Louisville coach Scott Satterfield said he wasn’t going to be the Gamecocks’ next coach and not long after Louisiana coach Billy Napier said he was staying with the Cajuns. Both Satterfield and Napier had been mentioned as candidates to succeed Muschamp.
