A lot on the line with Kansas City businesses’, groups’ Super Bowl bets

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — When it comes to Super Bowl LVIII, it’s not just the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers with something to lose.

Dozens of Kansas City businesses and organizations are placing friendly bets with their counterparts in San Francisco.

The Chiefs are Super Bowl underdogs against the 49ers. Turns out they kind of like it

Charitable donations, free beer, and roller coaster and shelter pet names — not to mention pride and bragging rights — are on the line.

Here are just a few of the local wagers groups have made on Super Bowl LVIII:

Boulevard Brewing

Kansas City-based Boulevard Brewing Company is going head-to-head with San Francisco’s 21st Amendment for what they’re calling a “Brewery Bowl.”

But this isn’t just about bragging rights. It’s for a good cause. Each business has selected a charity that the losing brewery will support.

Boulevard is supporting Win for KC, which advocates for girls and women’s sports and fitness. Meanwhile, 21st Amendment has selected the 49ers Foundation.

But of course, in a Brewery Bowl, there’s also beer on the line.

In addition, the losing company will send the winner a care package of their finest beer and culinary delights from their city, plus showcase merch of the winner on social media.

Harvesters

Harvesters has issued a challenge to the three food banks serving the Bay Area.

Now San Fransisco-Marin Food Bank, Second Harvest of Silicon Valley and Alameda County Community Food Bank are all trying to beat Harvesters to the goal: Which team’s fans will donate the most before the Super Bowl?

Kansas City-area residents can visit this website to donate to Harvesters.

“If there’s anything Kansas Citians like, it’s some friendly competition,” says Stephen Davis, President and CEO of Harvesters. “The food banks serving the Bay Area all do tremendous work, and this is a chance for us to shine a light on that and on the needs that exist in both communities.”

Worlds of Fun

The Kansas City amusement park has made a wager with California’s Great America for the Super Bowl.

The losing park will have to name one of their rides after the opposing team for their opening weekend, KRON reports.

If the Chiefs win, Great America’s “The Patriot” ride will be changed to “The Soaring Chiefs” on March 23-24. If the 49ers win, Worlds of Fun will rename the “Zambezi Zinger” to “Niners Thrill Rally” on May 4-5.

KC Pet Project

Sunday’s big game isn’t just for humans. KC Pet Project and Humane Society of Silicon Valley are betting on who will be the top dog, too.

The shelter with the losing team has to send local treats for the winning shelter’s staff, plus toys and treats for their adoptable animals.

The losing shelter will also name five animals after players on the winning team and send a congratulatory message to the winners.

No matter who wins on the field, it sounds like the real winners will be shelter pets.

LEGOLAND

The two LEGOLAND locations in Kansas City and the Bay Area are facing off on Super Bowl Sunday, too.

LEGO fans in Kansas City can vote here on what special build represents the Chiefs. The Bay Area center is coming up with its LEGO creation as well.

After the big game, the losing team will have to display the winning team’s LEGO creation in their football stadium.

Nelson-Atkins

The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art has a social media wager on the line with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

The museum with the losing team has to post a video of their director wearing a hat or jersey from the winning team, sharing a favorite object in the winning museum’s collection.

But that’s not all. The restaurant at the losing museum will also have to serve a traditional dish from the winning museum’s city. For Kansas City, that’s barbecue, of course. For San Francisco, it’s cioppino, a rich fish stew.

“We are delighted to once again participate in a friendly face-off, this time with our close colleagues at SFMOMA,” said Julián Zugazagoitia, Director & CEO of the Nelson-Atkins.

“It’s been a very exciting football season and we are so proud of the Chiefs. I anticipate a super showdown on Sunday, and while I don’t want to jinx the outcome, I hope our friends are hunting down the best barbecue recipes to serve the weekend after the game.”

Mid America Freedom Band

This Kansas City band has thrown down the gauntlet, challenging the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band to a friendly bet.

If the Chiefs win, San Francisco’s band will have to perform and post either “Kansas City” by Leiber and Stoller, or a chart by Taylor Swift or Kansas City native Janelle Monáe.

If the 49ers are Super Bowl champs, the Mid America Freedom Band will perform and post “I Left My Heart in San Francisco” by Tony Bennet, or a chart by Journey or another San Francisco artist.

We know Chiefs Kingdom would love to hear the instrumentals behind “I’m going to Kansas City. Kansas City, here I come.”

Great Jobs KC

This Kansas City nonprofit is partnering with San Francisco nonprofit Students Rising Above for a Super Bowl challenge.

The two organizations have started a “Raising in the Red Zone” campaign to see which group can raise the most money for students through the final play of the game. Both nonprofits are trying to raise $10,000.

If the Chiefs and Great Jobs KC wins, a Students Rising Above leader will wear a Chiefs jersey and dance to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” in front of Levi’s Stadium.

But if the 49ers and Students Rising Above win, a Great Jobs KC leader will wear a 49ers jersey and walk around Arrowhead Stadium with a sign that reads, “Who’s Irrelevant Now?” in a nod to “Mr. Irrelevant” himself Brock Purdy.
