It looks like Jaguars uniforms are getting a throwback. Which ones will they wear?

Is it finally time for some throwback cats?

The Jacksonville Jaguars will celebrate their 30th season in the NFL in 2024. And to commemorate it, the team announced on social media that throwback uniforms are in the works, something that delighted the fans in DUUUVAL.

The Jags would be the first expansion team from the 1990s onward that would feature a throwback uniform. The Carolina Panthers (1995) and Baltimore Ravens (1996) have tweaked their logos and uniforms like the Jaguars (though certainly not to the same extent), and the Houston Texans (2002) have barely changed their look inaugural season.

Will the Jaguars break out their '90s unis, the ones they wore to the verge of the Super Bowl after the 1996 and 1999 seasons? The team hasn't made anything official yet, but the logo they teased was the one that adorned the jerseys of Tony Boselli, Fred Taylor and Mark Brunell. Here's what to know:

What were the Jacksonville Jaguars' first uniforms?

The Jaguars broke into the NFL in 1995, and they introduced something a lot of other expansion franchises were bringing at the time: teal.

The Jags' first home uniforms featured a teal jersey with white numbers and letters outlined in gold and black. Below the numbers on the sleeves sat an image of a crouching jaguar reaching out with its paw to swipe at an opponent. The original jaguar head logo donned black helmets, and the pants were white with thick teal stripes down both legs with gold and black piping.

The unis were tweaked in 1997, replacing the block lettering with more curved figures and thinner gold piping in the pants. Black alternates were added in 2002, but that basic design stayed largely unchanged until 2009.

Did the Jaguars change their uniforms?

The Jaguars are not expected to change their current uniforms, the ones they've had since 2018. But on Monday, April 15, they teased on social media that a throwback was on the way.

The Jaguars uniforms have gone through several tweaks over the past 30 years. The team's first significant overhaul came in 2009, when they ditched the more traditional sleeve and pant stripes in favor of sleek, slim accents that curved from the front to the back.

An even more drastic change came in 2013, shortly after Shad Khan became the team's owner. The Jags added a swatch of color to the sleeves, implemented a shield logo over the heart of the jerseys and, of course, introduced the world to two-toned helmets. That design was toned down in 2018, keeping the collar accent while simplifying the overall look to its current design.

What were the Jaguars' old colors?

The Jaguars have kept to the same teal, gold and black colors since their first season in 1995, with only slight tweaks. They went away from teal as their primary color in favor of black in 2012, but they went back to fully embracing the teal in 2021.

What is the history of the Jaguars helmet?

The original Jaguars helmet was supposed to be silver with a leaping Jaguar as the logo. But that changed after Jaguar, the British car maker, said it looked too much like their logo, giving us the black helmet with the jaguar head when the team made its on-field debut in 1995.

But by far the biggest change to the helmet came in 2013, when the Jaguars rolled out the first two-toned helmet in NFL history. The front was black, which gave way to gold in the back, all behind a revamped jaguar head logo. It certainly was a unique look, and one the team took to the AFC Championship Game after the 2017 season.

The Jags went back to all-black helmets in 2018.

When did the Jacksonville Jaguars change their logo?

The Jaguars have always featured a roaring jaguar head on their helmets. In 2013, new owner Shad Khan unveiled a new iteration of the logo that was a little sleeker and closer to a realistic representation of the animal.
