A look at high school sports in Lenawee County in the week of Jan. 29 - Feb. 3

The calendar is moving to February, meaning we're past the halfway point of the high school sports winter season and conference play is heating up while the postseason is nearing.

Here's what's gone in Lenawee County high school sports this week:

MONDAY

Girls Basketball

Blissfield 47, Morenci 45

BLISSFIELD — A great Morenci comeback fell short against Blissfield in a matchup of league leaders.

Blissfield (9-2) has a two-game lead in the Lenawee County Athletic Association and Morenci (10-2) has a two-game lead in the Tri-County Conference. The non-conference game lived up to its hype, going down to the wire.

The Royals had their biggest lead of the game at 22-13 when Abrie Louden sank a 3-pointer in the final seconds of the first quarter. Morenci used a solid halfcourt defense and timely shots to claw back into the game and were down two points at halftime as Emersyn Bachelder connected on a short runner with 1:04 left in the second quarter to make it a 26-24 game.

Blissfield’s June Miller and Evelyn Joughin of Morenci traded 3-point buckets early in the fourth quarter before Joughin scored in the paint to give Morenci its first lead since early in the game at 41-40.

It lasted about 20 seconds, however, as Blissfield’s Avery Collins drove to the basket, got fouled and sank two free throws. Peyton Tennant’s turnaround jumper made it 44-41 a few seconds later.

Collins led Blissfield with 17 points while Tennant added 12 points and nine rebounds.

Bachelder scored 17 for Morenci.

Hudson 52, Fayette 42

FAYETTE, Ohio — Hudson crossed the border to pick up a victory.

Taylor Kopin scored 22 points and Dinah Horwath put in 13 points for Hudson (5-6). Kopin, who went to the free throw line 16 times, had 10 rebounds and three steals. Sam Anderson had four assists.

Adrian 30, Sand Creek 20

ADRIAN — The Maple defense shutout Sand Creek in the third quarter, helping Adrian hang on for win No. 5 on the season.

Ella Salenbien led all scorers with 14 points for the Maples (5-5).

Player of the Week Tanana Emmedorfer finished with 14 points for Sand Creek (1-10).

Napoleon 37, Addison 33

NAPOLEON — The Panthers hung with the Pirates thanks to a big first half by Kayli Trumble.

Trumble hit three 3-pointers and scored all 15 of her points in the first half. Addison (3-10, 1-7 Cascades Conference) was limited to seven second-half points.

Ida 50, Ida 37

ONSTED — Karli Kimerer scored 22 points for the Wildcats, but it wasn't enough to get the LCAA win.

Onsted (5-7, 2-4 LCAA) got 17 of those 22 points from Kimerer in the second half as it trailed 27-13 at the half.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Napoleon 42, Addison 30

NAPOLEON — It was a tough day for Addison, who found out earlier that Spencer Brown will have season-ending knee surgery.

Brown missed several games after getting off to a great start and had returned to the Panther lineup.

Gunner Demeuse scored 13 points in the loss to Napoleon. Addison is 4-10 (1-5 Cascades West).

Bowling

Temperance Bedford at Adrian

ADRIAN — The Maples picked up an SEC White crossover sweep as the boys won a tight match, 16-14, while the girls rolled to a 27-3 victory.

The boys lost the first Baker Game, 154-147, but took the second, 161-118, and also took the pin total to go up 6-4.

The Kicking Mules two three of the five first individual games to go up 11-8, but Adrian took four of the second five matches, including a 202 from Xander Finkbeiner, 188 from Gabe Arnold, 182 from Harrison Boyd and 177 from Austin Garcia.

The girls took both Baker Games for a 10-0 lead before Jailyn Lahring led the way in match play with a 151.

Blissfield at Clinton

TECUMSEH — The Redwolves swept the Royals at 10 Pin with the boys winning a close 17-13 dual while the girls rolled to a 28-2 win.

The Blissfield boys led 6-4 after the Baker Games, but Clinton took control in match play behind Lucas Goodman's 236, Logan Roberts' games of 200 and 189, Emmet Bodmer-Claussen' 199 and Justin Celmer's 188 Mason Harden's 181.

On the girls side, it was all Clinton as Paige Shankland had a 213 and 200 and Emerald Sierer rolled a 168.

Onsted at Hudson

HUDSON — The Hudson boys and girls both defeated Onsted in LCAA play with the Tigers winning the boys dual, 28-2, while the girls won 25-5.

Despite the loss, James Bayes rolled games of 190 and 184 while Jayden Valasek rolled a 198. Samantha Nichols led the girls with a 209 while Breanna Rosenthal rolled a 193.

No scores were available for Hudson.

TUESDAY

Boys Basketball

Adrian 69, Jackson 64

JACKSON — The Maples got 21 points from Stevie Elam in the SEC White Division victory.

Sean Parker added 15 and Antonio Brown had 14 for the Maples (11-2, 2-1 SEC White).

Sand Creek 60, Erie Mason 50

ERIE — The Aggie defense forced 28 turnovers by Erie Mason.

Trevor Opel scored 21, Rory Eack had 12 and Aidan Walsh added 10 for the Aggies (7-6, 2-4 TCC). Carson Preston had nine assists.

Blissfield 66, Manchester 42

BLISSFIELD — Three Royals scored in double figures as the Royals moved to two games above .500.

Gabe Schnoor poured in 19 for the Royals (8-6) while Mason Case added 14 and Chet Meyer had 10. Five different Royals combined for a season-high 11 3-pointers. Meyer added five assists.

Fayette 38, Hudson 35

HUDSON — The Tigers were within one in the fourth quarter but couldn’t break an 11-game losing skid.

Isaac St. John had 16 points while Jackson Jones had 13 points, five rebounds and three assists for Hudson (1-13).

Chelsea 61, Tecumseh 48

TECUMSEH — The Bulldogs turned it on at the right time to hand Tecumseh its first loss in SEC White play this season.

Tecumseh (11-2, 2-1 SEC White) battled with Chelsea through three quarters, leading 24-22 at the half and trailing 40-39 after three, but the fourth belonged to the Bulldogs.

Max Danley and Mason Tuberville each had 11 points to lead Tecumseh.

Columbia Central 70, Madison 61

MADISON TWP. — The Golden Eagles got off to a hot start, outscoring Madison 26-2 in the first quarter.

Player of the Week Antonio Nieto had 12 points, seven rebounds and six assists while Bryce Jordan had 12 points, seven assists and four steals for Madison (6-10).

Whiteford 75, Britton Deerfield 69

BRITTON — The Patriots were down by as many as 13 in the fourth quarter and made it a two-point game with an 11-0 run.

Brayden Shiels 3-pointer from the corner pulled BD within 70-68 after being down 70-57 with just over five minutes left.

Logan Shiels scored 19, Ryan Good had 18, Colin Johnson scored 14 and Brayden Shiels added 12 for BD (12-4, 5-4 TCC).

Girls Basketball

Tecumseh 60, Chelsea 57

TECUMSEH — A furious late comeback gave Tecumseh its first win against the Bulldogs since 2016 and ended Chelsea's 32-game SEC White win streak.

Tecumseh (9-3, 3-0 SEC White) led most of the game, but the Bulldogs raced ahead in the fourth before Chloe Bullinger and Makayla Schlorf created steals and hit pair of big 3-pointers to take the lead before Alli Zajac sank two free throws to give her 1,000 for her career and cap off the win.

Schlorf, who had the game-winning 3-pointer, had 11 points in her return to the lineup while Bullinger and Zajac each had 13. Addi Zajac had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Adrian 48, Jackson 34

JACKSON — The Maples broke open a close one by scoring 19 points in the fourth quarter.

Ella Salenbien had 26 points for Adrian (6-5, 2-2 SEC White), who made 19 of 30 free throw attempts.

Onsted 42, Sand Creek 29

ONSTED — Karlie Kimerer's hot hand continued for Onsted, scoring 12 points and adding six steals and five rebounds. Onsted is 6-7 on the season.

Tanana Emmendorfer had 10 points and 14 rebounds for the Aggies (1-11).

Hanover-Horton 39, Addison 35

ADDISON — The Comets had to come from behind to beat the Panthers, outscoring them 15-8 in the final quarter.

Laci Patterson led Addison (3-11, 2-8 Cascades Conference) with 10 points.

Whiteford 39, Lenawee Christian 34

OTTAWA LAKE — The Bobcats were held to one point in the first quarter but came back to beat the Cougars for the first time since 2014.

Brielle Parker and Hannah Baker scored nine points each for LCS (5-7, 4-3 TCC).

Boys Swimming

Milan 112, Tecumseh 57

MILAN — Tecumseh was down six seniors in the pool, but still have five personal bests in the dual with Milan.

Trent Fahle had two of the those PRs in the 50 and 100-yard freestyles.

WEDNESDAY

Girls Basketball

Madison 43, Hillsdale 28

HILLSDALE — The Trojans won again with defense, holding the Hornets to 10 points in the first half.

Caylan Sower scored 13 points to lead the Trojans. Nevaeh Parish tossed in nine for Madison (11-3, 6-2 LCAA).

Morenci 51, Britton Deerfield 17

MORENCI — The Bulldogs held the visiting Patriots to five field goals and remained on top of the TCC.

Emersyn Bachelder led the Bulldogs (11-2, 6-0 TCC) with 11 points while Evelyn Joughin and Addyson Valentine scored 10 points each. Leah Rorick added nine and Colbie Ekins pulled down 11 rebounds while Joughin had nine assists and five steals.

Lily Watson had five for BD (2-11, 1-6 TCC).

Boys Basketball

Onsted 71, Pinckney 26

ONSTED — Ayden Davis collected another double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds and two more Wildcats hit double figures in points in the win.

JT Hill had 19 points and seven rebounds and Rylan Henagan had 11 points for Onsted (10-4) and seven assists. Talan Hutchinson rang up 10 assists.

Whiteford 79, Sand Creek 32

OTTAWA LAKE — Whiteford held Sand Creek to its lowest output of the season – including a 1-point fourth quarter by the Aggies.

Trevor Opel led Sand Creek (7-7, 2-5 TCC) with 17 points.

Gymnastics

Tecumseh 128.2, Coldwater 125.7

COLDWATER — The Tecumseh co-op team picked up a road win led by Madi Rentfrow.

Rentfrow (Columbia Central) took second in the all-around (33.4) while placing second on the vault (8.75) and bars (8.15) and third on the beam (8.1) and floor (8.4).

THURSDAY

Girls Basketball

Blissfield 50, Ida 25

IDA — The Royals had a season-high 16 steals as a team – 10 by Avery Collins – and won on the road.

Blissfield (10-2) is 7-0 in the league and has a two-game advantage with the second half of the season looming.

Avery Collins had 18 points and 10 steals. Leigh Wyman had 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.

Madison 54, Dundee 21

MADISON TWP. — The Trojans had another outstanding game on defense, giving up nine baskets and 21 points.

Jaeda Parish led all scorers with 14 points for the Trojans (12-3 7-2 LCAA). Jeremiah Powers scored 13 and Nevaeh Parish had nine.

Clinton 49, Hudson 39

HUDSON — The Tigers trailed by two going into the fourth quarter, but Clinton pulled away down the stretch.

Zoey Sierer had a big game with 20 points for the Redwolves (6-5, 3-4 LCAA).

Taylor Kopin led Hudson (5-7, 3-4 LCAA) with 12 points.

Lenawee Christian 59, Britton Deerfield 45

BRITTON — Emilia Yatzek had a great game with 20 points as the Cougars snapped a four-game losing streak.

Hannah Baker chipped in with 14 points for LCS (6-7, 5-3 TCC) and five rebounds while Izzy Brooks had 12 points and five rebounds.

BD (2-12, 1-7 TCC), was led by Alivia Salenbien’s 10 points.

Hillsdale 63, Onsted 43

HILLSDALE — JayElle Christian had a big night for the Wildcats, but it wasn't enough as Hillsdale pulled away in the second half.

Christian had a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds to go with six steals while Kayla Gerken had 10 points and four rebounds.

Onsted (6-8, 2-5 LCAA) trailed 39-26 at the half.

Boys Basketball

Jonesville 66, Addison 59

ADDISON — The Panthers climbed back into the game with a huge fourth quarter but fell short of beating the Comets.

Drew Spink hit four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter on his way to 18 points and Jaxen Sword scored 14 of his 30 points in the final quarter for the Panthers (4-11, 2-10 Cascades).

Boys Swimming

Adrian 116, Ypsilanti 26

ADRIAN — The Maples cruised to an SEC win, taking all but one event.

Hadyn Gould and London Rising each won two individual events with Gould winning the 200 freestyle (1:54.22) and 100 backstroke (51.68) while Rising won the 50 freestyle (22.11) and 100 breaststroke (1:01.44). Ian Baker won the 200 IM (2:13.71), Maddox Betz won the diving event (132.05), Brayden Kilpatrick won the 100 freestyle (51.86) and Noah Judson won the 500 freestyle (5:26.50).

Gould, Kilpatrick, Rising and Betz won the 200 medley (1:44.85) while Judson and Betz were joined by Skyler Fox and Dolan Elliott won the 200 freestyle (1:51.65) and Baker, Rising, Gould and Judson won the 400 freestyle (3:39.78).

Gould's backstroke time broke the school and pool record.

Pinckney 94, Tecumseh 82

PINCKNEY — Tecumseh dropped a tight SEC dual at the Pirates behind a pair of wins from Grant Fahle.

Fahle won the 100 backstroke and butterfly and Sam Warren won the 200 IM.

Bowling

Chelsea at Adrian

ADRIAN — The Maples boys teams came back after getting swept in the Baker Games to beat Chelsea in an SEC White match, 17-13, while the girls fell 28-2.

Xander Finkbeiner and Gage Arnold led the comeback with Finkbeiner rolling games of 239 and 190 while Arnold rolled 234 and 195. Carter Allen added a 203 and Sawyer Cranmore had a 176.

Sydney Chesher led the girls with a 160 and 157.

FRIDAY

Boys Basketball

Adrian 65, Tecumseh 43

TECUMSEH — The Maples made a statement, beating rival Tecumseh on the road by 22 points.

Adrian (12-2, 3-1 SEC White) had one of its best defensive showings of the season, holding Tecumseh (11-3, 2-2 SEC White) to only 10 points in the opening quarter and only 14 made shots.

Stevie Elam continued his spectacular season with 21 points, including three emphatic dunks, while Jaxson Francis had 13 points.

Tecumseh's Ryan Mossburg and Ryan Barrie each had 13 points.

Madison 63, Dundee 54

DUNDEE — It didn’t take Madison long to make its presence felt in the Lenawee County Athletic Association.

The Trojans went on the road and beat state-ranked Dundee, handing the Vikings their first conference loss.

Antonio Nieto scored 29 points and had five rebounds and five steals for the Trojans (7-10, 4-6 LCAA). Brooks Horwath scored 12 points and had four assists while Bryce Jordan had six assists. Jayden Holly chipped in with five steals.

The Trojans held Dundee’s Braiden Whitaker, averaging 22 points a game, to 10.

“We did a good job of not letting him drive,” Madison coach Erik Thompson said. “He hit a couple of threes, but only a dunk for two. We pressed them and tried to let the other guys dribble and pass and shoot.”

Lenawee Christian 88, Britton Deerfield 38

BRITTON — The Cougars eclipsed the county record for most points in a quarter while scoring 41 points in the opening eight minutes and won for their ninth-straight game.

Brandon Summer led LCS with 23 points, Jaxon Salenbien scored 17, Daniel Scrupsky had 15 and Tyler Salenbien added 13 for 12-2 (7-1 TCC) LCS. The Cougars have a two-game lead over Summerfield in the TCC.

The previous record for points in an opening quarter was Onsted’s 38-point opening quarter in 1983.

BD fell to 12-5 (5-5 TCC) with its fifth loss in the last eight games. Ryan Good (nine points) and Owen Plum (eight) led BD.

Onsted 72, Hillsdale 53

ONSTED — The Wildcats pulled into a tie for the top spot in the LCAA in front of a big Homecoming crowd.

Ayden Davis scored 28 points, pulled down 17 rebounds and blocked seven shots. JT Hill hit four of five shots from 3-point range and finished with 22 points. Rylan Henagan had seven assists, Talan Hutchinson had seven assists and Aidan Paquin had six assists.

Onsted improved to 11-4 with its sixth consecutive win and 7-1 in the LCAA.

Sand Creek 65, Morenci 28

SAND CREEK — Rory Eack and Trevor Opel got back on track, combining for 43 points in the Aggies’ eighth win of the season.

Eack finished with 23 points and Opel 20 for the Aggies (8-7, 3-5 TCC).

Morenci (1-15, 0-9) was led by Shamus Alcock who scored 15 points.

Blissfield 68, Ida 62, 3OT

BLISSFIELD — The Royals survived triple overtime to beat Ida and have a three-game win streak for the first time this season.

Gabe Schnoor led the Royals (9-6, 6-3 LCAA) with 21 points, Chet Meyer added 16, Tyler Ganun scored 12 and Mason Case had 11. Ganun also had 10 rebounds.

Clinton 41, Hudson 28

CLINTON — The Redwolves won for the first time since Jan. 16 by getting past the Tigers.

Jalen Stelzer led all scorers with 20 points. Eli Turner added 11 for Clinton (6-9, 3-6 LCAA).

Hudson (1-14, 0-9) was led by Qwaden Wallace, who had eight points.

Girls Basketball

Tecumseh 63, Adrian 32

TECUMSEH — Tecumseh wasn't as crisp as it could be following Tuesday's monumental win against Chelsea, but it still topped its SEC White rival by 31.

Chloe Bullinger led the way with 17 points while Addi Zajac had 11 and Alli Zajac, who was honored after the game for eclipsing 1,000 points, had 10.

Tecumseh improved to 10-3 and 4-0 in the SEC White. The Maples (6-6, 2-3 SEC White) got 15 points from Ella Salenbien.

Morenci 43, Sand Creek 18

SAND CREEK — The Bulldogs started their second round of the TCC like the first round – with a win.

Emersyn Bachelder scored 14 points to lead all scorers. Evelyn Joughin added eight points for Morenci (12-2, 7-0 TCC).

Sand Creek (1-11, 0-5 TCC) got six points from Payton Steinke and Carley Allen.

Addison 39, Jonesville 34

JONESVILLE — The Panthers picked up their biggest win of the season, beating 8-6 Jonesville by five.

Taylor Jezierski and Izzy Durkee had 10 points each while Laci Patterson scored eight for the Panthers (4-11, 2-8 Cascades)

Addison is 4-11.

Quincy 40, Lenawee Christian 35

QUINCY — The Cougars got nine points each from Brielle Parker and Hannah Baker but fell to 6-8 on the season.

Emilia Yatzek had nine rebounds for the Cougars.

Wrestling

Cascades Conference Championship

GRASS LAKE — Addison took third at the Cascades Conference meet with a pair of second-place finishes for the Panthers.

Addison finished with 110.5 points, trailing Manchester (220) and Napoleon (160.5).

Making runs to the finals was Caleb Potts (126 pounds) going 3-1 with three pins while Joe Clark (175) went 2-1 with a pin.

Prep Hockey

Orchard Lake St. Mary's 3, Lenawee United 1

BLOOMFIELD — Lenawee is battling through a tough stretch of games as it lost its third-straight game against Division 3 No. 2 Orchard Lake St. Mary's.

United (13-6-1) struck first with a goal from Brennan Cornack (Tecumseh) of an assist from Iain Mahaffy.

OLSM tied it late in the period and took the lead lead in the third after a scoreless second.

SATURDAY

Wrestling

LCAA Duals

All eight teams gathered Friday and Saturday in Ida and Hudson where Dundee went 7-0 while Hudson went 6-1 and Clinton went 5-2 to take the top three spots.

The Tigers' lone loss came to the Vikings (56-6) while defeating the Redwolves (54-16), Madison (48-22), Blissfield (66-9), Onsted (78-0), Hillsdale (64-18) and Ida (73-6). Clinton defeated Madison (44-27), Blissfield (63-18), Onsted (51-27), Hillsdale (53-27) and Ida (77-0) while falling to Dundee (65-6).

The Trojans took fourth, going 4-3 with wins against Onsted (50-27), Blissfield (57-24), Hillsdale (51-24) and Ida (60-23) while falling to Dundee (63-12).

Onsted took fifth, going 2-5, with wins against Hillsdale (54-28) and Ida (52-29) while Blissfield went 2-5 as well with a 42-42 win on tiebreaker criteria against the Wildcats while also beating Ida (60-23).

SEC Tournament

ADRIAN — The Maples hosted the rest of the SEC where Tecumseh took fifth and Adrian took seventh while Temperance Bedford won the title.

Tecumseh's Max Bledsoe won the 215 title by going 2-0 in two tight matches. Max Marten (138) was second, going 2-1.

Adrian got a pair of second-place finishes with Micah Blaker (106) going 2-1 with a pin and major decision while Chase Henline (165) went 2-1 with a pin.

Chemic Clash Girls Tournament

MIDLAND — The Clinton girls traveled to Midland where all four girls placed, led by Faith Blackburn and Raven Aldridge.

Blackburn took second at 135 by going 2-1 with two pins while Aldridge (145) went 3-2 with a pin and major decision to take fourth.

Mrs. K Memorial

TOLEDO, Ohio — All four of Hudson's girls placed in Toledo with Aubree McClain leading the way.

McClain (100) took second as she went 2-1 with a pin and major decision while Grace Miller (105) was third going 3-1 with two pins and Sabree Bonsell (125) took fourth as she went 2-2 with two pins.

Hockey

Lenawee United 4, Legion ETA 0

CHELSEA — United snapped a three-game skid to get win No. 14 on the season.

Lenawee (14-6-1) got goals from Cameron Ritz (Adrian) and Rhett Micallef (Onsted) while Nicko DeVitto (Clinton) got the shutout in net.

Competitive Cheer

Saline Invite

SALINE — The Maples took part in the Saline Invite where they took fourth in Division 2 and beat out Division 1 Crestwood and Division 3 Father Gabriel Richard with a score of 564.1.

Jonesville Invite

JONESVILLE — Madison took first overall with a score of 706.76 at the Jonesville Invite.

Addison took fifth (649.46) while Sand Creek took eighth (504.3).
