A look at Adrian College, Siena Heights sports from Feb. 5-10

The Adrian College men's hockey team clinched a fifth-straight NCHA regular season title Friday as it beat No. 10 Trine, 6-2, at Arrington Ice Arena.

The third-ranked Bulldogs (19-5-1, 14-2 NCHA) got a goal and two assists from Mathew Rehding while Riley Murphy and Bradley Somers each added a goal and an assist. Julien Jacob, Ian Amsbaugh and Casey Gerstein each had a goal while Matt Couto had two assists and Jaden Shields, Jacob Suede, Zachary Heintz and Austin Clyne each had one.

Dershahn Stewart made 28 saves in the win.

The Bulldogs then traveled to Angola, Indiana to finish the regular season where they trailed 3-2 in the second before scoring five-straight goals for a 7-3 win.

Connor May had two goals and an assist while Murphy scored twice, Rehding had a goal and two assists and Ryan Pitoscia had a goal and an assist.

Alec Lovisek had the other goal while Clyne, Gerstein, Shields and Somers each had an assist.

The No. 5 women's team clinched the NCHA title a week ago and completed an unbeaten league season at 16-0 (23-2 overall) with a 5-0 shutout of Trine Friday and a 7-0 win on Saturday.

Nolan Suggs made 21 saves in the win.

On Friday, Une Bjelland had two goals while Karmen Anderson, Jocelin Hudanish and Callie Wollschlager all had one.

Kathryn Truban had two assists while Zoe Lohrei, Tia Lascelle, Aileena Dopheide and Paige Pomerleau had one.

Annie Gilbert made nine saves in each shutout.

Saturday, Allie Hubenschmidt scored twice while Saige Biddle scored once and assisted one. Sydnie Crockett, Annika Hanson, Hunter Reardon and Lascelle all scored once.

Maya Roy had two assists while Pomerleau, Kaleigh Cadorette, Truban, Lindsey Sorrell, Dopheide, Nicole Pietrucha, Bjelland and Wollschlager all had assists.

ADRIAN

Wrestling

The Bulldogs clinched at least a share of back-to-back MIAA titles Thursday after topping Olivet, 29-16.

Zach Phifer (125 pounds) and Tyler Davis (133) got Adrian started strong with a pair of pinfalls before Olivet got a decision and major decision at 141 and 149 to make it a 12-7 dual.

Zachary Platte (157) picked up a decision before Olivet's Ramiro Guerrero (Adrian High School) got a decision back to make it 15-10.

Blake Williams (174) got a major decision and was followed up by a tech fall from Dylan Wellbaum (184) and a pin from Jackson Beck-Calvert (197).

Men's Basketball

The Bulldogs dropped their Wednesday MIAA matchup at Hope, 74-51.

Nick Seifert and Kendall Chrismon each had 10 points to lead Adrian.

The Bulldogs capped the week with an 87-73 loss at Albion to fall to 6-17 and 4-8 in the MIAA.

Women's Basketball

The Bulldogs had a strong start leading 14-9 after the first, but Trine bounced back to take the MIAA matchup Wednesday, 64-53.

Kylie Skidmore put up 10 points, five assists, three rebounds and two steals while Julia Tierman had 10 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

The Bulldogs fell 78-40 at Albion to drop their record to 8-14 and 3-11 in MIAA play.

Bailey Taylor had 14 points, nine rebounds and a block while Skidmore had 11 points, three rebounds, three steals, two assists and a block.

Men's Volleyball

The Bulldogs split Day 1 at the Illinois Wesleyan Quad, beating Edgewood in four sets, 17-25, 25-17, 25-22, 25-19, and falling to Wesleyan, 26-24, 25-22, 25-12.

Chase Heuer had 27 kills, two aces and 14 digs while Andrew Gawrisch had 34 assists, 14 digs, three blocks and two aces.

Adrian (7-6) finished the week with a four-set win against Wabash, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23 and a sweep of Wisconsin Lutheran, 25-15, 25-12, 25-19.

Heuer added 27 kills and 16 digs while Gawrisch added 45 assists and eight aces.

Track and Field

The Bulldogs traveled to the Tiffin Open where they took two first place finishes.

Emme Koutz won the women's 800-meter (2:17.95) while Will Houvener won the men's 3,000 (9:00.69).

SIENA HEIGHTS

Women's Basketball

The Saints struggled in the first half, trailing 33-25 at the half, and 45-38 going into the fourth where they took over for the 68-60 win at Northwestern Ohio.

Kayla Hinton put up 12 of her team-high 20 points in the fourth while E'Anna Won had eight and two of her three steals.

Hinton finished with 20 points, six rebounds, a steal and an assist while Won had 14 points, eight rebounds, three steals, a block and an assist. Jakarri Alven had 10 points, nine rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

SHU added a 68-56 win at Cornerstone on Saturday to improve to 21-3 and 16-2 in the WHAC.

Jillian Gelso had 17 points and three rebounds while Olivia DeLong had 15 points, five rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block. Hinton added 14 points, five rebounds, five steals and two steals while Alven had 11 points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals.

Men's Volleyball

The Saints picked up a sweep at home against Olivet, 25-13, 25-18, 25-21.

Daniel Rua had 12 kills, five digs, two blocks and an ace while Zak Tucker had 32 assists, 11 digs, four kills, two aces and a block.

They followed up with a win Friday against Mount Vernon Nazarene, 19-25, 28-26, 25-23, 25-14 before falling in the finale with Nazarene on Saturday, 24-26, 21-25, 27-25, 25-14, 15-11.

Rua had 32 kills, eight digs, three assists and three blocks while Marc Arsenault had 29 kills, 20 digs, two blocks, two aces and two assists.

Tucker added 91 assists, 14 digs, 10 kills and two aces for the Saints (3-2).

Men's Basketball

The Saints kept up with Northwestern Ohio in the first half, but the Racers ran away with the WHAC win in the second half.

SHU trailed 50-42 at the half.

Colin Nutter had 27 points, 13 rebounds, two blocks and an assist. Brent Wiles had 12 points and five rebounds, Shawn Brown had 11 points, seven rebounds, two steals and an assist while Jonas Tester had 10 points and an assist.

The Saints fell at Cornerstone, 89-70, on Saturday to fall to 9-15 and 6-12 in the WHAC.

Brown had 18 points, seven rebounds, an assist and a block while Tester had 18 points and four rebounds. Nutter added 11 points, three rebounds, an assist, a steal and a block.

Track and Field

Siena Heights took part the MIAA/WHAC Challenge at Aquinas on Friday where the women took fourth and then placed fifth.

Linnearia Richards won the 60-meter hurdles (9.15) while Tiffani Larder won the triple jump (31-feet, 3.25-inches). Savion Tyler won the men's high jump (6-5.5).

Wrestling

The Saints took fifth in the WHAC tournament while Indiana Tech won the title.

SHU placed seven wrestlers with one champion in Randy Frailey at 133.
