Logan Ryan shares story of Giants trainer saving his wife's life
NEW YORK — Giants safety Logan Ryan told an incredible story on Wednesday about how a Giants trainer’s advice may have saved Ryan’s wife’s life this week.
Ryan’s wife Ashley was flying to Florida to vote on Monday night when she began experiencing extreme stomach pains. She told her husband about it on the phone around 1 a.m. Tuesday, as Ryan was leaving MetLife Stadium after the team’s loss to the Bucs.
Ashley was going to try to sleep it off, but when Ryan told Giants assistant athletic trainer Justin Maher about his wife’s symptoms, Maher insisted she go to the emergency room immediately.
And that advice led to emergency surgery that likely saved her life. Doctors found an ectopic pregnancy, which can lead to life-threatening internal bleeding.
“My wife ended up going to the E.R., and they ended up catching an ectopic pregnancy, where the egg was in the wrong place in the Fallopian tube and it was about to burst,” an emotional Ryan said on a Zoom call. “So she ended up going through the emergency surgery and they ended up saving her and preventing a lot of what could have happened. And that was a trainer on our team Justin Maher telling my wife to go to the E.R. at 1 a.m., could have saved her life or a lot of internal bleeding there. And that’s the type of organization we have here.”
Ryan raved not just about Maher and the Giants organization but about head coach Joe Judge, who put Ryan’s family above football immediately.
“My kids are OK. My wife is recovering well. She’s OK. And Joe said, ‘Ya know, if you need to fly to Florida, don’t worry about football,’ ” Ryan said. “And that’s what Joe is as a man and as a coach. I know we care about X’s and O’s and winning and losing. But there’s really good people here. That’s why I came here.
“And I’ll do everything I can to play for a coach like that and an organization like this,” he continued. “Because if that wasn’t the case, I don’t know if my wife would be here today. And I’m extremely grateful for the organization and for Joe and for everyone to understand that things are bigger than football, especially this year.”
The Ryans own a house in Florida, by the way, which is why his wife was flying to vote there — “a very important state for this vote,” Ryan said.
Ryan wasn’t feeling well himself as he was leaving the stadium early Tuesday morning, either, dealing with a hip injury from a big-time collision with Bucs receiver Tyler Johnson.
But he is eternally grateful that everyone with the Giants put his wife and his family first.
