Locals take on national field in Hoosier Am golf tournament at Pfau
There will be plenty of local flavor when the Golfweek Hoosier Amateur returns to Indiana University's Pfau Course for a three-day run starting Tuesday morning.
A field of 24 women and 87 men will tee off starting at 7:30 a.m.
The women's groups will tee off first and will include a pair of incoming IU freshmen in Maddie May (7:57) and Nicole Kolbas (8:06).
The men will start at 8:41. Local competitors include City Golf Tournament champ Jason Bannister (8:59) and runner-up Jace Day (11:21), who both play at Southern Indiana; four players with Bloomington South connections, alums Drew Todd of Ball State (10:38), Jacob Paine of Franklin (11:39) and Nick Bellush of Purdue-Fort Wayne (12:42 p.m.) and senior Happy Gilmore (11:30); former Brown County standout Bailey Howard (12:15) and former City Golf champ Mitch Oard (1:00).
The men's field also included five current Hoosiers on their home course: Eric Berggren (9:17), Nick Piesen (9:35), Noah Gillard (9:53), Thomas Hursey (10:11) and Robbie Bender (12:42).
Neither 2022 champ, Siarra Stout (women) and Nels Surtani (men) is returning.
Several more players from Power 5 conferences will tee it up, including those from Michigan, Purdue, Oregon, Georgia, Ohio State, Kansas and Michigan State.
As the Golfweek Hoosier Amateur has built into an annual late-summer event, the Pfau Course has risen in national prominence. It’s tied with French Lick Resort’s Ross course for second place on Golfweek Best List of best public-access courses you can play in Indiana.

“The course is showing its teeth this time of year,” Pfau director of golf Dan Hilker told Golfweek. “Expect the leaders to be at the top of the field in driving accuracy, scrambling, and putting.”
