Local Sports: Pitchers duel as Whiteford softball sweeps Milan

OTTAWA LAKE – Unity Nelson of Whiteford and Milan’s Mariah Stines battled in a classic pitchers’ duel Thursday.

Stines was outstanding, scattering four hits and an unearned run.

But Nelson was even better.

The junior tossed a no-hitter with 13 strikeouts and her team won 1-0.

“It was two really good teams and two really good pitchers,” Whiteford coach Matt VanBrandt said. “Both pitchers hung around the strike zone the whole game.”

Shay Alexander beat out a bunt single in the sixth inning for her second hit of the game and came around to score the only run of the game.

There weren’t a lot of hits in the second game, but three of them were home runs.

Madison Gray and Virginia Heikka went deep for Milan and Patrina Marsh cleared the fences for the Bobcats in an 8-4 Whiteford win.

Karlei Conrad picked up her 11th win of the season, one behind Nelson for the team lead.

Whiteford improved to 23-2.

“We’ve been battling some injuries, but we are working through it,” VanBrandt said. “We’re just happy to get to play some really good competition.”

Milan dipped to 11-5.

“The first game was great,” Milan coach Kirk Davis said. “Our defense was stellar and their defense was great. Unity pitched a fantastic game. She kept us off balance.”

PREP SOFTBALL

Monroe sweeps Ida

IDA – Summer Smith went 6-for-8 with a triple, home run, and seven RBI for Ida, but Monroe was able to overcome that to post a pair of 7-5 wins Thursday.

“We had great weather today and both teams played well,” Monroe coach Jim Davis said. “We still have plenty of things to work on, but we've been playing better lately and hope we're turning the corner.”

Alana Aulph went 4-for-4 and winning pitcher Avery Collett was 3-for-4 for Monroe in the first game. Ally Lewis homered and Natalie Kelley drove in three runs.

Allie Hall and Jenna Ruettinger had two hits each in the second game for the 12-9 Trojans.

Jessica Schrader was 3-for-4 in the first game for 11-11 Ida, which has played six games in four days.

No-hitter for SMCC

Alayna Pinkelman and Abby Leachy combined on a no-hitter with 11 strikeouts in six innings as St. Mary Catholic Central blanked Riverview Gabriel Richard 6-0 Thursday.

Camryn Gee and Faith Dean both went 2-for-3 and scored twice to lead the offense. One of Dean’s hits was a triple and Gee drove in two runs. Avery Dalton homered and drove in three runs.

“The girls did a good job staying disciplined at the plate and played solid defense,” SMCC coach Dani Emery said.

Vikings complete sweep

DUNDEE – Kennedy Irwin collected four hits, including a pair of doubles, and stole five bases to lead Dundee to a 4-1, 9-4 sweep of Sand Creek Thursday.

Kaylee Imo and Lauren Doane picked up pitching wins for the 14-4 Vikings.

“Tonight we did not play our best and left too many runners on base, but we battled though and got two wins,” Dundee coach Mickey Moody said.

Butt, Skinner excel

GIBRALTAR – Addison Butt and Addison Skinner had three hits each and combined on a no-hitter to lead Gibraltar Carlson to a 10-0 win over Lincoln Park Thursday.

Butt drove in two runs and Skinner scored twice. Alyssa Kamm and Lauren Dunwoody added two hits each.

“These ladies are figuring out what it takes to win games,” Carlson coach Jason Gyolai said. “Looking forward to see how they finish.”

PREP BASEBALL

Carlson wins for seniors

GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson celebrated Senior Day with a 12-2 win over Lincoln Park Thursday.

Seniors Nico Reach and Antonio Jezierski combined for a solid pitching effort and Reach, Zezierski, Jackson Zachary, Dominik Laskowski, Matthew MacBride, and Sam Stirling led the offense.

Tammerine lifts Bobcats

SWANTON, Ohio – Logan Tammerine struck out 12 and collected two hits, including a home run, to lead Whiteford past Swanton 12-2 Thursday.

Brenden Masters logged three hits and Shea Ruddy and Luke Rasor joined Tammerine with two for the 13-6 Bobcats.

Dundee swept away

YPSILANTI – Dundee took a 9-7 lead with four runs in the top of the seventh inning, but Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard came back with three in the bottom of the inning to win 10-9 Thursday.

Evan Imo went 3-for-4 and Matt Atkinson and Cooper Buhl added two hits for Dundee.

The Vikings were routed 15-5 in the second game despite two hits by Trevor Schroeder.

PREP TENNIS

SMCC dominates

PLYMOUTH – Molly Blanchett and Analiese Flint did not lose a game at the top two singles spots to lead St. Mary Catholic Central to an 8-0 win over Plymouth Christian Thursday.

Other winners for the Kestrels were Elizabeth Zwack, Hannah Borer-Claire Leach, Gianna Benvenuto-Ioanna Laskaska, Addison Boylan-Parker Harrington, and Mikayla Camilleri-Evelyn Finn.

Mule doubles shine

TEMPERANCE – Bedford dropped just four games in doubles during a 7-1 win over Airport Thursday.

Maddie Armstrong-Grace Deiners won with double doughnuts, Lauren Werbiansky-Lucy Conlan and Paige Anderson-Dorothy Dillon both posted 6-0, 6-1 wins, and Audrey Dillon-Miranda Moore gave up one game in each set.

Singles winners for the Mules were Sophia LaPointe, Jessica Schulty, and Alivia Brown.

Makayla Ridner won at No. 2 singles for Airport’s point.

Milan doubles battle

PINCKNEY – Gwen Jones-Ava Demond and Gabby Dryden-Maya Grimley went to three sets and the other two doubles were competitive, but Milan fell 8-0 to Pinckney Thursday.

RIVERVIEW – Milan didn’t score a goal and didn’t win, but it was good enough for a title.

A 0-0 tie with Riverview clinched the Huron League championship for Milan.

Banko scores on PK

NEW BOSTON – Freshman Ava Banko scored on a penalty kick Thursday as New Boston Huron tied Grosse Ile 1-1 Thursday.

SMCC grounds Jets

Emerson Bergmooser, Caroline Roecker, and Maddie Zaleski scored for St. Mary Catholic Central in a 3-1 win over Airport Thursday.

Leah DeSarbo, Quinn Harrington, and Nora Kinsey played well for the 8-8 Kestrels.

Pioneer tops Monroe

Monroe suffered a 5-1 loss to Ann Arbor Pioneer Thursday.
