Local Sports: Monroe soccer nips Mules; Bedford volleyball triumphs
MONROE – Talen Swinkey was denied twice, but his shots were turned into Monroe goals in a 3-1 boys soccer win over Bedford Thursday.
Bedford was able turn aside Swinkey’s hard shots, but Vishwas Joshi and Jovanny Gallegos converted on the rebounds. Trevor Mann had the other Trojan goal.
Monroe has not lost to its arch-rival since 2019, a stretch of 11 games.
The game was tied 1-1 at halftime.
Monroe coach Ian Cooke called it, “a very good response in the second half to pull away and secure the victory.”
Ethan Merkle was strong in goal for the 5-1-1 Trojans. Yuma Watanabe, Matt Grenn, Bryson Lane, Logan Brockway, Evan Ortiz, Cooper Robinson, Eric Sanchez, Luis Diaz, and Aiden and Colin Gray all played well.
PREP SOCCER
Airport reaches mark
BLISSFIELD – Airport matched last year's win total with a 6-1 victory over Blissfield Thursday night. The win pushed the Jets to 7-2-1 overall.
Nolan Sanders led the way with two goals and three assists. Sanders now has 19 goals and 14 assists in 10 games.
Hudson Moore scored two goals with Nolan Ortega and Eli Marut adding one apiece.
"We responded well tonight after a bad loss at Milan the night before," SMCC coach Goran Cepo said. "We are a very young team, we have to learn from both the good and bad in order to keep getting better."
SMCC nips Rams
FLAT ROCK – Holden Kennedy scored two goals and Carter Hoffman added one as St. Mary Catholic Central (4-3) nipped Flat Rock 3-2 Wednesday.

“Flat Rock played a tough game and made us earn this victory tonight,” SMCC coach Nathan Olson said.
Kennedy, Hoffman and Kien Clawson were credited with assists.
Mitchell Smith and Laran Rogier scored for Flat Rock.
Higgins leads Milan
MILAN – Weather and field conditions forced the Milan-Airport match to be moved to Milan Wednesday.
Carter Higgins appreciated playing on the home field. He racked up three goals and two assists to lead Milan to a 9-1 victory.
Caiden Lambers added two goals and Nolan Matley, Caleb Klein and Fred Brown one each. Noah Bussell had two assists including a corner kick which resulted in an own goal. Adam Johnson also recorded two assists.
Hudson Moore scored for Airport off an assist by Nolan Sanders.
Two hats for Huron
NEW BOSTON – Andy Traster and Ian Petrick each finished with three goals and two assists at New Boston Huron overwhelmed Jefferson 13-0 Wednesday.

Gray hits .692
TEMPERANCE – Victoria Gray logged 10 kills with a .692 hitting percentage to lead Bedford past Ypsilanti Lincoln 25-13, 25-8, 25-15 Thursday.
Mya Krohn (11 digs), Jaelyn Hall (6 kills), Kaylin Schroeder (23 assists), Kadence Esser and Maddie Goforth also stood out for the 17-1 Mules.
Bears stop Carlson
MONROE – Anna Boggs had a strong night with seven aces, six kills and six digs as Jefferson downed Gibraltar Carlson 25-16, 25-17, 25-14 Thursday.
“Anna has been playing out of her mind these last two games,” Jefferson coach Kylie Ely said. “She is someone you want on the court at all times.”
Clare Boggs added 10 digs and 2 aces.
Jefferson’s junior varsity also won.
Langenderfer excels
PETERSBURG – Erie Mason got 23 assists, nine digs and nine points from Brooke Langenderfer in a 28-26, 25-15, 25-12 win over Summerfield Thursday night.
Other Mason standouts were Zoie Stubleski (16 digs), Rylee Grodi (17 digs ), Jayanna Willets, Elizabeth Sweeney (17 kills) and Jada Sipert (9 kills).

Rams set records
WOODHAVEN – Lauren McNamara helped Flat Rock set a trio of school records in a 98-85 loss to Woodhaven Thursday.
She set new standards in the individual medley and breaststroke and teamed with Riley Chevalier, Aileen McNamara, and Sophia Chan to set a school record in the medley relay.
Big drop for Lahna
SALINE – Captain Lauren Lahna dropped 25 seconds off her best time in the 500-yard freestyle during Monroe’s 146-36 loss to Saline Thursday night.
Other strong performances came from Sophia Smith, Nicole Rykse, Abby Dieckmann and Delani Willey.
CROSS COUNTRY
Foshag takes title
WOODHAVEN – Andy Foshag of Monroe was the boys winner in 16:58 in Wednesday’s Warrior Classic.

Myles Bray and Josh Riggs also won medals and Hayden Barker, Noah Gould, Jonathan Weber, CJ Chlebowski, and Damian Wooley ran personal-best times for the Trojans.
PREP TENNIS
Milan doubles perfect
MONROE – Monroe won all four doubles matches by 6-0, 6-0 scores in an 8-0 sweep of Airport Wednesday.
Pitching shutouts were Zach Farmer-Grant Segrist, Luke Morse-Clark Friese, Elias Hobbs-Will Klieber and Alec Cicotte-Zach Weathers.
Dexter tops Bedford
DEXTER – Bedford came away with three singles victories but came up short in the match as Dexter won 5-3 Thursday.
Jaxon Nejedlik won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Vince Cole earned a hard-fought 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 win at No. 3 singles, and Carter Ryan won at No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-0.
PREP GOLF
SMCC wins dual
St. Mary Catholic Central topped Plymouth Christian Academy in a dual meet Thursday at Monroe Golf & Country Club.
Ana Cuccia led the way with a 49. Anna Perna (53), Nora Kinsey (53), and Meadow Paolino (55) also played well for the Kestrels.
Freshman leads Monroe
Freshman Ashken Aaron scored a 57 and finished ninth overall to lead Monroe in a tri-meet Thursday at Carrington Golf Club.
Pinckney won the meet with a score of 191, Tecumseh was second with 205, and Monroe placed third with 232.
Carly Kuehnlein and Allison Casey both carded 58 for Monroe. Olivia Gladieux added a 59.
Bedford places third
ADRIAN – Bedford Senior Lauren Werbiansky was third overall with a 44 as Bedford finished third in a tri-meet Thursday at Woodlawn Golf Club.
Ann Arbor Pioneer led the way with 185, Adrian was runner-up with 197, and Bedford scored 207.
Natalie Hackette added a 47 for Bedford.
JUNIOR HIGH VOLLEYBALL
Whiteford sweeps
PETERSBURG – Whiteford swept Summerfield Wednesday with the eighth grade winning 25-19, 25-8, 25-20 and the seventh grade posting a 25-13, 25-21, 25-21 victory.

Babka gets ace
TEMPERANCE – Jim Babka used an 8-iron to shoot a hole-in-one on the 140-yard No. 6 hole at Giant Oak Golf Club Thursday.
