Local Sports: Jefferson volleyball comes from two sets down to win

MONROE – Things looked bleak for Jefferson’s volleyball team Wednesday night.

The Bears lost the first set to Airport 25-18, then looked worse in dropping the second 25-16. But they were able to put that aside to take the third set 27-25, then controlled the last two 25-13, 15-9 to pull out the victory.

“It was a big win for us tonight,” Jefferson coach Kylie Ely said. “We started off slow but kicked it up the third set.

“They dug down deep and pulled it out. They played with heart and had a fire in them after the first two sets. This really was a team win.”

Clare Boggs led the defense with 24 kills, Gracie Jones racked up 15 kills, and Lindsey Gennoe contributed 32 assists and 16 digs.

RaeAnn Drummond (13 kills), Renee Shrewsbury (12 kills), Peyton Zajac (23 assists), Joelle Shrewsbury (21 assists), and Madi Boehm (27 digs) stood out for 4-12-1 Airport.

Hesse sparks Rams

FLAT ROCK – Hannah Hesse racked up 22 assists, 8 digs, and 3 aces to lead Flat Rock past New Boston Huron 25-23, 25-15, 25-11 Wednesday.

Sarah Giroux (15 kills, 13 digs, 2 blocks), Reagan Higdon (6 kills, 6 digs, 3 aces, 1 block), and Maddie Stager (4 kills, 4 digs) also stood out for Flat Rock.

PREP SOCCER

Kennedy, Clawson lead

MONROE – Holden Kennedy recorded three goals and an assist and Kien Clawson had two of each for St. Mary Catholic Central in an 8-0 win over Jefferson Wednesday.

Trent Zachel split the shutout with Cameron Cole, then notched two assists. Chaz Harrington, Jacob St. Pierre, and Joseph Laginess also scored. John Netter had an assist.

“We really had to take the opportunity to slow the game down and find our open players on the field,” SMCC coach Nathan Olson said of his 7-7 team.

Backup goalie saves Ida

BLISSFIELD – Asher Hamm, who had to take over in goal for Ida when the starter was issued a yellow card, made a key stop on a penalty kick to spark the Blue Streaks to a 5-1 win over Blissfield Wednesday.

Ida was nursing a 1-0 lead when Hamm made the save.

Cole Angerer scored his first two goals of the season while Jaxon Bolster rang up two goals and an assist and Dane Holycross logged a goal and an assist. Wade Johnston also had an assist.

Huron grounds Jets

CARLETON – Ian Petrick scored four times and Andy Traster notched three goals and three assists for New Boston Huron in an 8-1 win over Airport Wednesday.

Aidan Dolencic had the other goal, Tony Trupiano recorded two assists, and single assists went to Roman Pritt, Mason Thomas, and Johann Vasquez.

Milan blanked

GROSSE ILE – Milan dropped a tough 1-0 decision to Grosse Ile Wednesday.

Milan’s junior varsity won 4-1.

Mules on a roll

TEMPERANCE – Bedford followed up Monday’s 8-0 win over Riverview with a 6-2 triumph over Ypsilanti Lincoln Wednesday.

PREP GOLF

Huron has 1-2 punch

MONROE – Brooklyn Burke shot 45 and New Boston Huron teammate Adriana Skene 46 as the Chiefs clipped St. Mary Catholic Central 198-213 at Monroe Golf & Country Club Wednesday.

Aubrey Moreno (53) and Addison Bozynski (54) rounded out the lineup for Huron.

Lauren Tolliver shot 52 to lead SMCC. Alaina Wille and Nora Kinsey both checked in at 53 and Elizabeth Zwack shot 55.

Carlson shoots 184

SOUTHGATE – Gibraltar Carlson shot a round of 184 to beat Wyandotte Roosevelt by 18 strokes at Southgate Municipal Golf Course Wednesday.

Madison Cooper was medalist for the Marauders with 41. Ella Atkinson shot 44, Anika Irwin 45, and Maggie Samford 54.

Rams fall to Pirates

RIVERVIEW – Riverview took the first three spots in a 222-239 win over Flat Rock Wednesday.

Emma Neace led the Rams with 56.
