Local Sports: Ida, Monroe volleyball put on five-set thriller for Teal Attack

IDA – It is one of the best nights of the season for Ida's volleyball team.

The Blue Streaks' Teal Attack match against Monroe has become an annual tradition. The game, which raises funds for ovarian cancer research, has become a heartwarming and highly competitive part of the schedule.

Gabby Gobrecht of Ida and Alana Aulph of Monroe battled at the net in the Teal Attack game held Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Ida High School. Other players Ally Younglove of Monroe, Kelsey Stein (8), and Ellie Jones of Ida.

"The girls love it," Ida coach Ashley Begeman said. "It draws a big crowd. They know they're playing for something more than just volleyball. It's always an amazing night. And it's so competitive."

Last year, Ida traveled to Monroe for the match and lost in five sets.

The roles were reversed Thursday as Ida defeated Monroe 25-15, 25-16, 21-25, 17-25, 15-9.

"The atmosphere was absolutely electric," Begeman said. "It was great."

Begeman said that the Blue Streaks (19-14-4) played their best volleyball of the season to take a 2-0 set lead over the Trojans.

"Monroe came back and battled and we let off the gas a little bit," she added. "But the fifth set we kicked it back into gear and found that confidence again."

Addyson Wilt, Ellie Jones, and Mia Karl all finished with 7 kills for Ida. Gabby Gobrecht also played very well and had 4 blocks. Jessica Schrader had a great night with 29 digs and serve received well.

Monroe coach Angela Tedora said that the Trojans recently switched to a 5-1 offense and that contributed to the slow start with the team out-sized on the right side. A few tweaks helped get Monroe back into the match.

"Once we got rolling, our hitting was strong in our third and fourth sets, using all the options we had on the floor," Tedora said. "The girls played as a team, even in the sets we dropped. When we had to make strategy changes or substitutes the girls worked together and did the job they were asked to do."

Monroe was led by Alana Aulph (25 assists, 23 digs), Ally Younglove (12 kills, 9 digs), Trinity Sieb (22 digs), Amanda Leicht (8 kills), Addy Simmons (6 kills), and Sophia Bussell (7 kills).

"Ida’s team and families hosted a fantastic evening to support ovarian cancer awareness," Tedora said.
