Local Sports: Bedford volleyball; Huron, Jefferson cross country excel

MONROE – Bedford’s Jaelyn Hall was unstoppable during a 25-19, 25-9, 25-10 volleyball victory over Monroe Tuesday.

The senior led her team with 9 kills and hit .600.

The Mules also got strong performances from Kaylin Schroeder (31 assists), Lucy Monahan (6 kills), Mya Krohn (9 digs), Victoria Gray (8 kills), and Alivia Brown (7 kills).

Bedford also won the junior varsity and freshman matches.

Whiteford wins at home

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford played the first dual match on its home court Tuesday and rolled to a 25-12, 25-12, 26-24 win over Britton Deerfield.

Bailey Spradling led with 11 kills while and Alaina McClain and Karlei Conard each added 7. Spradling also was credited with 12 digs.

Liv Ruehle rang up 25 digs and Anna Schober notched 27 assists.

Erie Mason sweeps

ERIE – Jada Sipert recorded 12 kills and Beth Sweeney added eight as Erie Mason dispatched Sand Creek 25-10, 25-20, 25-13 Tuesday.

Zoie Stubleski (6 digs), Jenna Wright (8 digs, 4 aces), and Brooke Langenderfer (26 assists) also stood out for Mason.

Dundee falls short

DUNDEE – Kennedy Irwin had a big night with 18 kills, 20 digs and 3 aces, but Dundee lost a 27-25, 27-29, 20-25, 25-22, 15-12 battle with Adrian Madison Tuesday.

Lilly Motylinski added 16 kills and 4 aces, Briley Bordine 21 digs, Jadyn Sprau 19 digs, and Lola Salenbien 39 assists.

“They may not have come out on top this time, but I couldn't be any prouder of them,” Dundee coach Keri Salenbien said.

Secor serves up 16

PETERSBURG – Faith Secor served up 16 points to go along with 5 blocks and 3 kills as Summerfield outlasted Morenci 25-18, 21-25, 25-21, 20-25,15-9 Tuesday.

Other Summerfield standouts were Mia Miller (10 points, 6 kills), Jaeli Jones (12 kills, 4 blocks), and Ava Fisher (16 digs).

Summerfield also won the junior varsity match 25-17, 25-18, 12-15 behind strong performances by Maya Stone, Bethany Suydam and Grace Raymond.

Huron, Jefferson triumph

MILAN – New Boston Huron’s boys and Jeffeson’s girls were the winners in the first Huron League jamboree of the season Tuesday.

Jenna Pilachowski took first place with a time of 19:09.74 to lead Jefferson’s girls to 51 points, which was 6 better than runner-up St. Mary Catholic Central.

Airport was third with 83, Huron fifth with 104 and Milan seventh with 149.

Pilachowski got support from teammates Kim Miller (8th), Riley Peer (10th), Mia Schroeder (14th) and Alyssa Masserant (18th).

Cecilia Ortega of Airport was second, Bella LaFountain of SMCC third, Avery Turk of Huron fourth, Courtney Bovair of Airport sixth, Falyn Doss of Huron seventh, and Claire Lisker of SMCC ninth.

Amerie Wilson was Milan’s top finisher in 12th.

Huron’s boys scored 59 points to top runner-up Flat Rock by 29.

Jefferson was third with 89, SMCC fourth with 93, Airport fifth with 96, and Milan eighth with 226.

Lucas Kuhn, Luke Dulecki, Abdul Ghennewa, Kyle Biller, and Cameron Crane ran 2-6-9-18-24 for Huron.

Flat Rock placed Jacob Stanislawski (third), Lucas Taraszkiewicz (fourth), and Nathan Vargo (seventh) in the top seven.

Other top runners were Callum Bell of Airport (eighth), Simon VanderVlucht (10th), Max Foldvary (13th) and Henry Wickenheiser (15th) of SMCC, William Steinhour (12th) of Jefferson, and Parker Prior (29th) of Milan.

Mason boys take title

BLISSFIELD – Erie Mason’s boys scored 76 points to bring home the championship trophy from the Blissfield Invitational Tuesday.

The Eagles ran 6-7-22-26-33 with Austin Sulier, Parker Campbell, Collin Parent, Jackson Carner, and Brayden Hincher.

Keegan Masters took second for Whiteford and Isaak Rubley third for Dundee,

Mason’s Bailey Meiring took seventh for the Monroe County Region’s best finish in the girls race. Her teammate Elizabeth Lambert was 22nd.

Kaylee Hovey, Lydia Richards, and Natalie Swisher finished 9-23-24 for Dundee, and Braelyn Chiotti and Emily Rasor were 19th and 25th for Whiteford.

Two Marauders sixth

GIBRALTAR – Gibraltar Carlson had a pair of sixth-place finishers in the first Downriver League jamboree of the season Tuesday.

Nathan Lawe of Carlson placed sixth in the boys race and Reagan Reaume did it for the girls.

Lawe helped his team finish third in the team standings with support from Quinn Burgei (16th) and Austin Saavedra (21st).

The Marauders scored 86 points. Allen Park (33) and Woodhaven (35) had a great battle for first place.

Carlson’s girls scored 87 points to take fourth in a meet that Woodhaven won with 31.

Arianna Pate was 22nd for Carlson.

“We were down a few runners due to illness, so I believe our top three goal can be reached at the next jamboree,” Carlson girls coach Mike Pehote said.

PREP SWIMMING

Dundee goes 2-1

DUNDEE – Dundee beat Flat Rock 104-78 and St. Mary Catholic Central 117-63, but fell 98-87 to Detroit Country Day Tuesday.

Flat Rock beat SMCC 94-82 and lost to Country Day 106-78. SMCC fell 117-65 to Country Day.

“Lots of good races tonight,” Dundee coach Sarah Eubanks said.

Dundee’s Lillian Ratliff won the 200-yard freestyle and the butterfly. Teammates Joslyn Ball (100 freestyle) and Sara Carter (500 freestyle) also won.

Lauren McNamara took the 50 freestyle and backstroke for Flat Rock and joined Sophia Chan, Aileen McNamara and Riley Chevalier to take the 400 relay.

Stripp, Wayne double

TECUMSEH – Kamryn Stripp (individual medley, 100-yard freestyle) and Mary Kate Wayne (butterfly, breaststroke) were double winners as Milan beat Ypsilanti 117-27 and Tecumseh 101-53 Tuesday.

Kamryn Brown and Hailey Dunn went 1-2 in diving for the 7-1 Big Reds. Annabelle Williams (200 freestyle) and Kiera Luhrs (500 freestyle) also won events and Luhrs and Lila McKenna hit state-qualifying times.

Sorg leads Mason

ALLEN PARK – Sophia Sorg was Erie Mason-Ida’s top scorer Tuesday as the Eagles lost to Grosse Ile 118-60 and Allen Park 148-27 Tuesday.

Summer Smith also had a strong meet and Jessica Lay, Ellie Crawford, Sydney LaVoy, Lucia McClain, Rylee Shaffer, Natalie Lewis, Sidney Roderick, Taylor Collyer, and Alexis Etue all swam personal-best times.

PREP SOCCER

Monroe stays close

MONROE – Monroe trailed 4-0 at halftime, but only yielded one goal in the second half of a 5-0 loss to Ann Arbor Pioneer Tuesday.

“It was a brave effort against a superior team,” Monroe coach Ian Cooke said.

Talen Swinkey and Jovanny Gallegos played well for the 7-3-1 Trojans.
