Local Sports: Bedford tunes up for state volleyball tournament

BEDFORD – It looks like Bedford’s volleyball team is ready for the state tournament.

The Mules got their final tune up before playing in the District and dominated their Spooktacular Tournament on Saturday.

They rolled over Lenawee Christian, Adrian Madison, Manchester, Livonia Churchill and Ida in pool play, then dispatched Madison in the semifinals and Lenawee Christian in the finals.

Macy Madalinski had a strong overall day with 25 kills, a .561 hitting percentage and 12 digs. Alivia Brown added 19 kills, eight aces and 26 digs, and Jaelyn Hall 20 kills and 13 blocks.

Other top hitters were Victoria Gray (38 kills) and Kadie Morse (16 kills).

Kaylin Schroeder directed the offense with 91 assists and added 18 digs while Mya Krohn stood out on defense with 35 digs.

Kennedy Irwin (36 kills), Briley Bordine (41 digs) and Lola Salenbien (60 assists) led Dundee in a 1-3-1 day.

Bedford now sets its sights to the District on Monday at Woodhaven.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Jets fall in semis

MOUNT MORRIS – Airport reached the semifinals of the Mount Morris Tournament on Saturday before falling to Lansing Catholic.

The Jets (12-26-2) beat Summit Academy, split with Genesse Christian and lost to Lansing Catholic in pool play, then knocked off Mount Morris in the quarterfinals.

Peyton Zajac (31 assists, 27 digs, nine kills), RaeAnn Drummond (14 kills, five digs), Madi Boehm (36 digs), Jocelynn Jondro (12 kills, four blocks) and Jillian Baker (12 kills, three blocks) led Airport.

PREP SWIMMING

Williams leads Milan

RIVERVIEW – Annabelle Williams won the 100- and 200-yard freestyles and swam on two winning relays to lead Milan to first place in the Huron League Meet on Saturday.

The Big Reds finished with 627 points to 367 for runner-up Flat Rock.

St. Mary Catholic Central was third with 283 and New Boston Huron-Taylor sixth with 131.

Lila McKenna (500 freestyle), Krista Cook (backstroke) and Mary Katherine Wayne (breaststroke) also won individual events for Milan, and Wayne, Kam Stripp, Kiera Luhrs, Megan McChesney and Hannah Brady took seconds.

The Big Reds swept the relays and set eight pool records at Riverview and won their 24th straight Huron League title.

"This is a testament to the dedication and drive of our athletes," Milan coach Dan Heikka said. "Many of these girls have worked since we won number 23 last year to try to earn number 24.  They have trained through last winter, over the spring, summer, and all fall to make this happen.  These ladies put in countless hours."

Lauren McNamara won the individual medley and butterfly for Flat Rock and the Rams qualified two relays for the state finals.

St. Mary Catholic Central’s Maya Zaleski was second in both the 50 and 100. Kaylee Kamprath, Monika Burkardt, McKenzie Kidd, Elizabeth Wright and Katelyn Rutkowski also swam well.

PREP FOOTBALL

Whiteford dominates

OTTAWA LAKE – Whiteford dominated the Tri-County Conference this season, so it was no surprise that the Bobcats also dominated the all-league team selected by league coaches.

Whiteford’s first-team selections were center Chase Lee, guard RJ Cornett, tackle Jack Iott, receiver Kolby Masserant and running back Hunter DeBarr on offense; and linemen Drew Knaggs and Shevy Alexander, end Jake Iott, linebackers Brandon Knaggs and Stepan Masserant and backs Ryin Ruddy and Liam Waterford on defense.

Korbin Herrera (receiver), Cole Kreger (running back), Vaughn Brown (quarterback), Dillon Cannon (defensive line) and Phoenix Stefko (defensive back) were Erie Mason’s first-team players; and Tyler Dafoe (receiver), Jake Wadsworth (running back), Hayden Dusseau (defensive line), Brenden Myshock (defensive end), Mitchell Gomulinski (linebacker), Eli VanHuysen (linebacker) and Hayden Noland (defensive back) made it for Summerfield.

Nolan Walker, Tre Eitniear, Mason DeBarr and Trent Olrich of Whiteford; Maddix Wise, Cam Davis, Logan Goodin and Toby Frazier of Mason; and Summerfield’s Nathan Wadsworth received honorable mention.

Sportsmanship Award winners were Luke Vida of Whiteford, Jordan Adkins-Black of Mason and Trace Secor of Summerfield.
