Local Sports: Bedford golfers earn trip to Division 1 state finals

YPSILANTI – Bedford’s boys golf team is headed to the Division 1 state finals.

The Mules punched their ticket by placing third Wednesday in the Regional at Pine View Golf Club with a round of 341. Ann Arbor Skyline won the Regional with 301 and Saline shot 335.

Bedford showed great balance as Frank Soss and Jayce Yarad both carded 84, Carter Klawonn hit 85 and Spencer Eighmey. The Mules didn’t use an 89 by Taleon Guess.

Bedford’s Brad Reed was named Region Coach of the Year.

The state finals will be held June 9-10 at Grand Valley State University.

Monroe finished sixth with 359. Kyle Pafford was just two strokes shy of qualifying for state individually with 86 and Aiden Coury shot 87.

Bedford pitchers shine

TEMPERANCE – Gabe Bock, Tommy Huss, Braden Vineyard and Nolan Laskey combined all threw well for Bedford in a 7-1 win over Whiteford Wednesday.

Whiteford managed just one hit off the Bedford quartet.

"I wanted all of them to see live hitters before (the District Tournament) Saturday," said Bedford coach Craig Trychel, whose team crawled over .500 at 19-18. "It worked out exactly how we wanted it to go."

Huss and Laskey led the offense with two hits each and Josh Shepherd drove in three runs.

Brenden Masters recorded Whiteford’s lone hit and Nate Stevens drove in a run.

PREP SOFTBALL

Jets sharp defensively

CARLETON – RaeAnn Drummond and Zoe Peterson combined on a three-hitter with no walks and had great defense behind them in a 6-2 win over Plymouth Wednesday.

“We played the best defensive game I have seen all year tonight,” Airport coach Jessica Irwin said. “Brenna Baker and Olivia Tilley made some incredible plays in the middle infield.”

Baker and Drummond had two hits each to lead the offense.

Vikings finish 25-11

ADRIAN – Dundee wrapped up a 25-11 regular season by splitting a doubleheader against Hanover-Horton at Adrian College Wednesday.

The Vikings dropped the opener 1-0 despite what coach Mickey Moody called Kaylee Imo’s best pitching performance of the season.

Dundee took the second game 8-6 with the win going to Lauren Doane.

“Our offense was able to manufacture some runs,” Moody said.

Champs rewarded

FLAT ROCK – Huron League champion Milan placed four on the All-Huron League first team and three on the second.

Achieving first-team honors were Allison Millina, Emma Budd, Sylvia Koch and Leah Manzei. The second unit included Carleigh DeBrock, Emma Walline and Olivia Henry.

Other Monroe County Region players on the first team were Rylie Cassette of New Boston Huron, Breeya Kryk of Flat Rock, Cecilia Ortega of Airport and Braelyn Pearch of Jefferson.

Earning second team recognition were Lily Cholette and Maggie Warden of Huron, Emerson Bergmooser of SMCC, Courtney Kraszewski of Flat Rock, Hannah Dittrich of Airport and Ella Simpson of Jefferson.

Milan’s Aubree Higgins, Huron’s Addison Dolencic, Callie Eaton and Shaylyn Carpenter, SMCC’s Caroline Roecker and Leah DeSarbo, Flat Rock’s Megan Woelkers and Isabella Thomas, Airport’s Marlie Lozon-Liggett and Jefferson’s Madison Cox received honorable mention.
