Wednesday Roundup: Airport soccer ends frustration; SMCC volleyball wins showdown

CARLETON – Airport’s seniors left their home field after Senior Day Wednesday with something they had never experienced before – a soccer win over St. Mary Catholic Central.

The Jets’ 2-1 triumph in the Huron League Tournament marked the first time Airport had beaten SMCC in six years.

“This was a great game played by us on Senior Day,” Airport coach Goran Cepo said. “I can't think of a better last home game for our seniors than this.”

Nolan Sanders netted his 34th of the season with 25 minutes remaining. It was his 10th game-winner of the season.

Isaiah Chapdelaine had the other goal and Tayton Ruhlig was outstanding with nine saves for the 15-5-1 Jets.

“We created some really good chances on goal in the first half but their goalkeeper (Trent Zachel) is one of the best in the state and was very hard to beat,” Cepo said. “I'm beyond proud of the progress this group has made this season. We are playing well at the right time of the year.”
