Local Sports: A 1926 graduate is going into the Monroe Hall of Fame

MONROE – Monroe High went back a century to find one of the members of its latest class of inductees for its Athletic Hall of Fame.

Dave Munro, a track star from 1922-1926, headlines the class that will be inducted during halftime of Friday’s boys basketball game against Saline.

Munro won a state championship in the high jump in 1926 with a leap of 5-9, which became the state record at the time.

He went on to compete at Michigan Normal State College (now Eastern Michigan University) and became a high school teacher and coach.

The other inductees will be Herbert Scogg (swimming 1944-48, state champions in the 50-yard freestyle), Jeff Barnes (basketball 1980-82, two-time Monroe News Monroe County Region Player of the Year), Joy Salow (tennis 1986-89, three-time Monroe County Region Player of the Year), TJ Wrighten (football and track, set school record in high hurdles), 1986-90, Kenzo Webster (soccer 2001-03, set school record with 40 goals in 2002), Jake Duffey (2006-09, Monroe County Region Defensive Player of the Year) and Shayna Frank (softball 2014-17, All-State).

Ida pulls away for win

IDA – Just a single point separated Ida and Hillsdale at the end of the first half, but the Blue Streaks pulled away in the second half for a 53-31 win Tuesday night.

Ida’s defense displayed a tenacious effort following the intermission, holding Hillsdale to just 10 points in the second half.

“(Our) press and energy in the second half made the difference in the game,” coach Tim Leonard said.

The energy was spurred by back-to-back three-pointers by Kayla Liechty while Jessica Schrader scored 7 of her 21 points in the third quarter.

Baker connects from line

CARLETON – Brenna Baker made just three baskets from the field, but finished with 17 points to lead Airport past Wyandotte Roosevelt 58-21 Tuesday night.

Baker tallied a perfect 10-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Sophomores Oliva Gratz and Jillian Baker each scored 12 points for the 2-1 Jets.

Airport won the junior varsity game 51-21 as Jaelyn Toth scored 17 points.

Disastrous start for Dundee

BLISSFIELD – Dundee never recovered after getting shut out in the first period and fell 56-21 to Blissfield Tuesday.

No one scored more than 3 points for Dundee (1-2).

Carlson dips to 1-3

GIBRALTAR – Another sluggish start after halftime was too much for Gibraltar Carlson to overcome in a 58-46 loss to Trenton Tuesday night.

Three different Maruaders scored in double figures, led by Arianna Pate’s 12 points. Addison Wallace and Abby Carafelli each scored 10.

“Tough loss tonight, but we continue to see improvement with scoring the ball,” coach John Mason said.

PREP SWIMMING

Erie Mason-Ida wins two

WOODHAVEN – Mason Reynolds (200 freestyle, backstroke) and Cameron Tross (50, 100 freestyle) each won two events as Erie Mason-Ida swept Monroe 110-73 and Woodhaven 97-86 Tuesday.

The Eagles also won all three relays.

Jayce Hay (butterfly) and Alec Adams (500 freestyle) were winners for Monroe, which fell 102-83 to Woodhaven.

Dundee’s Bylow shines

DUNDEE – Drew Bylow hit state-qualifying times while winning the individual medley and backstroke and also swam on the winning 200 and 400-meter relays, but Dundee fell 97-84 to Ann Arbor Greenhills Tuesday.

Aaron Brewer and Lukas Neikirk finished 1-2 in diving and TK Westbrook won the 200-yard freestyle.

Milan drops two

CHELSEA – Ben Heikka was second in the 500-yard freestyle and third in the individual medley as Milan fell to Dexter 137-45 and Chelsea 98-81 Tuesday.

Tadas Zukuvskis (butterfly) and Elias Hobbs (breaststroke) had seconds and Gunnar Kruise was third in the both the backstroke and 100 freestyle.
