LOCAL ROUNDUP: Thorne becomes Catawba's all-time leading scorer

Jan. 15—SALISBURY — Catawba's Lyrik Thorne became the program's all-time leading scorer during Saturday's 70-58 win against Lincoln Memorial in women's basketball at Catawba.

Thorne — a graduate student who starred at Ledford — scored 33 points on 12-of-18 shooting to lead the Indians (11-2 overall, 6-1 South Atlantic Conference), ranked No. 4 nationally in the WBCA Coaches poll.

Thorne, Davidson County's all-time leading scorer and last year's SAC Player of the Year, surpassed the previous mark set by Danyel Locklear (2004) with 1,838 points.

CAROLINA CORE FC SIGNS CANETE

HIGH POINT — Carolina Core FC has signed Facundo Canete to its inaugural roster. The team will begin play this spring at Truist Point.

Facundo, a 23-year-old midfielder from Argentina, played in the United Soccer League 2 with Florida Elite Soccer Academy in 2021. He recorded 321 minutes and one goal as the club finished third in the Southeast USL2 division.

In 2022, Facundo joined Valley United FC of the National Independent Soccer Association.

T.W. ANDREWS BOYS, SHINING LIGHT

HIGH POINT — T.W. Andrews defeated Shining Light 75-71 in boys basketball Saturday in the MLK Classic at Andrews. The Red Raiders improved to 5-11 overall.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN BOYS, HICKORY

MATTHEWS — Wesleyan Christian lost 51-49 against Hickory in the boys basketball showcase Saturday at Carmel Christian.

Zacch Wiggins scored 16 points followed by Quamir Ingram with 11 points for the Trojans (14-7).

BISHOP McGUINNESS BOYS, MILLER SCHOOL OF ALBEMARLE

FLOYD, Va. — Bishop McGuinness fell 55-48 against Miller School of Albemarle (Va.) during the Chance Harman Classic boys basketball showcase Saturday in Floyd, Virginia.

Nicholas Graves scored 11 points to lead the Villains (11-3). Alex Waterfield added 10 points, followed by John Campbell with nine points.

GLENN GIRLS, SOUTHERN GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Glenn defeated Southern Guilford 31-24 in girls basketball Saturday in the MLK Classic at T.W. Andrews. The Ladycats improved to 2-13 while the Storm dipped to 4-11.

WRESTLING

PHILLIP REED RUMBLE

KERNERSVILLE — Six boys and five girls from area schools finished in the top four of their weight classes to highlight Saturday's Phillip Reed Rumble at Glenn.

Ledford's Tylen Schoeppner won at 150 pounds while Jake Cartrette took fourth at 120 pounds. Ragsdale's Hayden Rogers was second at 165 pounds, and Southwest Guilford's Landon Lopez was third at 106 pounds. Wheatmore's Trey Swaney (132) and Dominic Hittepole (175) also took second.

On the girls side, Ragsdale's Cherish Charley took first at 100 pounds while Southwest Guillford's Jayda-Spence Barnes was second in the same weight class. Trinity's Bliss Joyce also won at 132 pounds, while teammates Heather Vuong (107) and Layla Vasquez (126) finished second.

AT WALTER BASS HS INVITE

LYNCHBURG, Va. — Tianna Spinks and Elizabeth Deen highlighted Southern Guilford's performance with five top-five finishes during the massive Walter Bass High School Invitational track meet at Liberty University.

Spinks won the girls 300 in 39.63 seconds and took second in the top heat of the girls 500 in 1:18.71. Deen was second in the girls 55 hurdles in 8.41, fourth in the girls long jump in 17-01.25 and fifth in the girls triple jump in 36-02.75.

HPU TRACK

BLACKSBURG, Va. — High Point University placed in over a dozen events during the Virginia Tech Invitational on Friday and Saturday in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Dae'Nitra Hester highlighted the performance with a first-place finish in the women's 400 meters in 56.27 seconds and a third-place finish in the women's 300 in a personal best 39.03 seconds.

Brianna Malone also won the women's mile in 4:55.95, while Reilly Mazzetti won the men's 800 in a personal best 1:58.09 and Andrew Taylor won the men's high jump with a height of 2.16 meters.

Also posting top-three finishes were: Katie Taylor (second — women's 3000, 9:44.07), Sydney Horn (second — women's pole vault, 4.37m), Simeon Hayward (second — men's 800, 2:01.53), Chris Van Niekerk (second — men's shot put, 17.77m), Maxwell Robinson (second — men's pole vault, 4.90m PB), Ala'juwan Robinson (third — men's 60, 6.74), Cameron Rejonis (third — men's 800, 2:11.52) and Reid Holloway (third — men's pole vault, 4.90m).
