LOCAL ROUNDUP: Strong finishes by East girls, Oak Grove boys highlight Greensboro XC Invitational

Oct. 2—PLEASANT GARDEN — East Davidson's girls took first while Oak Grove's boys were second in the invitational division of Saturday's 39th annual Greensboro XC Invitational at Hagan-Stone Park.

Close to 90 schools competed in 10 races across age groups ranging from middle school to college — including a half dozen varsity high school races.

Winning boys team scores were: Holly Springs (54 points) in the developmental division, Northern Nash (86) in the invitational division, and Orange (57) in the championship division. Oak Grove had 130 points in the invitational division.

Winning girls scores were: Green Level (25) in the developmental division, East Davidson (99) in the invitational division, and Green Level (60) in the championship division.

Finishing in the top 25 of the boys races were: Ragsdale's Harrison Howard (seventh, 16:06.55) in the championship division; Oak Grove's Aiden Edwards (12th, 16:50.44), Luke Vannoy (16th, 17:09.83), Hunter Creech (18th, 17:23.06) and Nathan Welborn (23rd, 17:39.15) in the invitational division.

Finishing in the top 25 of the girls races were: East's Fatima Cepeda (12th, 21:02.41), Erin Gardner (14th, 21:14.73) and Avery Tysinger (16th, 21:30.14), Wesleyan Christian's Bailey LaRue (13th, 21:12.06), Oak Grove's Katherine Lockamy (19th, 21:35.89) and Natalia Everhart (21st, 21:47.28) and Addison Riling (25th, 21:51.07), and Bishop McGuinness' Claire Sullivan (23rd, 21:47.55) in the invitational division.

VILLAIN VOLLEYBRAWL

KERNERSVILLE — Falls Lake and Bishop McGuinness captured bracket titles to highlight Saturday's Villain VolleyBrawl at Bishop.

The event, featuring a number of top 1A teams from across the state, comprised pool play in the morning and a pair of bracket matches for each team in the afternoon.

Anna Holcombe from Falls Lake, which won its title in eight straight sets, was named MVP. Earning all-tournament honors were: Falls Lake's Jenae Mason and Kate KeZurik, Christ the King's Taylor Paul and Caroline Tuschong, Perquimans' Daven Brabble, Highland Tech's Alise Mayers, and Bishop's Karstin Workman.

WESTCHESTER COUNTRY DAY, FORSYTH COUNTRY DAY

HIGH POINT — Westchester Country Day edged Forsyth Country Day 9-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-17, 15-13 in PTAC volleyball Friday at Westchester.

Covington Hauser had 16 digs, three aces and 28 assists for the Wildcats (5-9 overall, 2-6 conference). Emilie Carey had eight kills and 11 digs, Ava Klein had 12 kills, Cassie Woodall had 30 digs, and Sutton Scott had 20 digs and two aces.

BOYS SOCCER

WESTCHESTER, FORSYTH COUNTRY DAY

HIGH POINT — Westchester Country Day outlasted Forsyth Country Day 1-1 (10-9 in penalty kicks) in a wild PTAC boys soccer match Friday at Westchester's Kennedy Field.

Daniel Volynets scored off an assist by Harriss Covington in regulation for the Wildcats (7-6 overall, 2-6 conference). Ben Van Dessel, Will Rives, Kaya Camdere, Coleman Schwartz, Beck Wilson, Chase Hesling, Thomas Brinson, Caleb Winstead, Van Dessel and Rives each scored in the PK shootout.

Nolan Patterson made seven saves in goal — stopping the Furies' 12th-round PK to secure the victory.

FOOTBALL

HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN, HARRELLS CHRISTIAN

HARRELLS — High Point Christian rolled past Harrells Christian 33-0 in nonconference football Friday at Harrells.

Tyler Eley completed all 12 of his passes for 236 yards and one touchdown to lead the Cougars (6-0). Ethan Devore ran 22 times for 82 yards and two touchdowns, plus made three catches for 54 yards.

Gavin Harris added 52 yards and one touchdown rushing and 42 yards receiving, while Toot Clay had 38 yards and one touchdown receiving.

On defense, Nolan Flemming had 10 tackles, followed by Josh Smith with nine tackles and a sack, Campbell Throckmorton with six tackles, and Benny Limbacher with five tackles.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, CORVIAN COMMUNITY

CHARLOTTE — Bishop McGuinness upended Corvian Community 34-27 in conference football Friday at Corvian. The Villains improved to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

LEDFORD, CENTRAL DAVIDSON

LEXINGTON — Ledford held off Central Davidson 33-27 in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference football Friday at Central Davidson.

Alex Sanford ran 21 times for 217 yards and four touchdowns for the Panthers (6-0 overall, 1-0 conference). Shay Ragland completed 6 of 12 passes for 105 yards and one touchdown — a 32-yard pass to Chase Tussey. Cameron Walker added a 44-yard catch, while Ragland had eight runs for 64 yards.

OAK GROVE, ASHEBORO

MIDWAY — Oak Grove topped Asheboro 57-14 in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference football Friday at Oak Grove.

Connor Creech completed 10 of 12 passes for 158 yards and two touchdowns plus ran nine times for 101 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Grizzlies (5-1 overall, 1-0 conference). Karson Williams had two catches for 52 yards while Sam Bennett had two catches for 33 yards — both had a touchdown.

Bradley Byrd had eight tackles, followed by Kyle Wagner and Ben Boulware with six each. KJ Leak also caused a fumble, and Markes Hardin had an interception.
