LOCAL ROUNDUP: Oak Grove girls reach MPC tournament final

Feb. 22—ASHEBORO — Top-seeded Oak Grove rolled past fifth-seeded Asheboro 57-34 in the semifinals of the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference girls basketball tournament Wednesday at Asheboro.

Trista Charles had 13 points, 12 rebounds and five steals while Kalin Favreau had 13 points, five assists and five steals to lead the Grizzlies (23-2), who led 31-9 at halftime.

Victoria Lockamy added 11 points, Cora Hadley had six points and Avery Ray chipped in five points and nine rebounds as Oak Grove advanced to Friday's championship against North Davidson or Montgomery Central.

OAK GROVE BOYS, CENTRAL DAVIDSON

ASHEBORO — Fourth-seeded Oak Grove lost 59-42 against top-seeded Central Davidson in the semifinals of the Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference boys basketball tournament Wednesday at Asheboro. The Grizzlies dipped to 12-14 overall.

BISHOP McGUINNESS BOYS, CARVER

KERNERSVILLE — Top-seeded Bishop McGuinness topped fourth-seeded Carver 66-29 in the Northwest Piedmont 1A Conference boys basketball tournament Wednesday at NC Leadership Academy.

Nicholas Graves had 21 points and four assists for the Villains (23-3), who led 34-6 at halftime. John Campbell added 10 points, three rebounds and three assists. Miller Aho contributed eight points and five rebounds.

Bishop will take on third-seeded College Prep and Leadership in the championship Friday night at 7:30 at NCLA.

BISHOP McGUINNESS GIRLS, CARVER

KERNERSVILLE — Top-seeded Bishop McGuinness cruised past fourth-seeded Carver 50-9 in the semifinals of the Northwest Piedmont 1A Conference girls basketball tournament Wednesday at NC Leadership Academy.

Adelaide Jernigan scored 19 points to lead the Villains (21-4), who led 35-4 at halftime. Claire Sullivan added nine points, while Kiersten Varner and Emma Wagoner each chipped in five points.

Bishop, seeking its ninth title in 11 conference tournament finals appearances since 2006, will face second-seeded NCLA on Friday night at 6 at NCLA.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD GIRLS, NORTHERN GUILFORD

GREENSBORO — Fourth-seeded Southwest Guilford lost 57-36 against top-seeded Northern Guilford in the semifinals of the Metro 4A Conference girls basketball tournament Wednesday at Northern. The Cowgirls dipped to 16-9 overall.

HPCA, WESLEYAN STANDOUTS TO PARTICIPATE IN ALL-STAR GAME

HIGH POINT — Four standouts from High Point Christian and Wesleyan Christian will participate in this year's North Carolina Private School All-Star Basketball Games.

HPCA's Isaiah Sanders will play for the West boys, coached by United Faith's Darrion Holloway. HPCA's Courtney Taylor and Angel Walker and Wesleyan's Ashley Browne will play for the East girls, coached by HPCA's Brittany Drew.

Drew will be joined by assistants Aaron Mayo, Scooter Nance and Brittany Cox.

The all-star game, featuring seniors from private schools across the state, will be Saturday, March 2, at Providence Day in Charlotte.

HPU MEN'S GOLF WEXFORD INTERCOLLEGIATE

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — High Point University tied for fourth as a team while Gregor Meyer tied for fifth individually to highlight the Wexford Intercollegiate on Monday and Tuesday at Wexford Plantation.

Meyer shot a 77-66-75-218 to tie for fifth. Jay Smith added a 77-71-74-222 to tie for 20th. The Panthers totaled a team score of 300-290-299-889 to tie for fourth. Georgia State won with a 287-295-291-873.

CHARLOTTE — High Point University's Jay Smith has earned this week's Big Conference Men's Golf Freshman of the Week honor.

He was joined by Winthrop's Mason Tucker as Men's Golfer of the Week.

Smith tied for 20th at the Wexford Intercollegiate with a 6-over 222 (77-71-74). He had four birdies in his 1-under-par second round and finished the tournament with 10 total. Smith moved up two spots in the final round to match his best finish of the season and helped the Panthers tie for fourth place as a team — tops among the six Big South programs competing and a season-best finish for HPU.
