LOCAL ROUNDUP: HPU-Longwood men's game selected for ESPNU broadcast

Jan. 19—HIGH POINT — High Point University's men's basketball game against Longwood has been selected to host ESPNU's third Big South Wildcard broadcast of the season.

The game originally scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 31, has been moved to Thursday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. in the Qubein Center. It will be the sixth time the Panthers have been on national TV and the second nationally televised game in the Qubein Center.

"We are thrilled to showcase our game against Logwood on ESPNU," coach Alan Huss said. "The Qubein Center and our game day experience are truly top notch and we cannot wait to share it with a national television audience."

This will be the second time the teams have met in front of a national TV audience, with Longwood winning the first 78-71 on Feb. 17, 2022, in the Qubein Center. High Point has appeared in ESPNU's Big South Wildcard series nine times previously, including each of the past three seasons.

Heading into this weekend's games, the Panthers are 15-4 overall and 4-0 start in conference play for the first time since 2015-16. High Point has ranked in the mid-major top 25 the past four weeks and currently sits at No. 13 in the Collegeinsider.com mid-major poll and No. 16 in the Field of 68 mid-major poll.

HIGH SCHOOL BASKETBALL

BISHOP McGUINNESS, GRACE CHRISTIAN

SANFORD — Bishop McGuinness gave state power Grace Christian a run early but fell 60-43 in nonconference girls basketball Thursday at Grace Christian.

Adelaide Jernigan, one of the country's top juniors, scored 20 points to lead the Villains (12-2), who scored the opening nine points of the game and led 17-11 after one quarter. Kiersten Varner added nine points, while Emma Wagoner had eight points.

Sarah Strong, one of the country's top seniors, scored a game-high 28 points as the Crusaders (20-0) led 23-21 at halftime and took control in the second half.

AT SOUTHWEST GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford lost 48-25 against Northwest Guilford in Thursday's wrestling match at Southwest.

THOMASVILLE — Thomasville won 72-12 against Bishop McGuinness and 66-14 against High Point Central to highlight Thursday's tri-meet at Thomasville. Central also won 42-30 against Bishop.
