Local roundup: East cross-country wins regional team titles

Oct. 30—DOBSON — East Davidson captured both team championships during Saturday's NCHSAA 2A Midwest regional cross-country meet at Fisher River Park.

The Golden Eagles will be among the top teams to watch in Saturday's NCHSAA state championships at Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex. The day will begin with the 1A and 3A meets starting at 9 a.m. The 2A and 4A meets will start at 2 p.m.

East captured five of the top 20 places in the girls race. Erin Gardner led the way with a third-place finish in 20:50.35, followed by Avery Tysinger (seventh, 21:30.73), Madyson York (12th, 22:11.92), Ibelka Peralta (14th, 22:33.94) and Fatima Cepeda (20th, 23:03.95). Chloe Montgomery added a 43rd-place finish in 25:32.71.

The Golden Eagles totaled 50 points in the girls team standings — ahead of West Stanly with 64 points in the 11-team field. Wheatmore, led by Olivia Hildreth (38th, 25:04.17) and Mattie Foshie (50th, 26:00.89) was 10th with 238. Trinity's Kayla Franklin (45th, 25:33.76) was also in the top 50.

East Davidson finished with 71 points to win the boys team standings — ahead of West Stokes with 80 in the 15-team field. Dallas Salter (seventh, 17:43.02), Owen Crum (eighth, 17:53.97) and Caleb Machorro (ninth, 18:04.82) led the Eagles, followed by Chase Ciccone (25th, 19:05.11), Parker Swicegood (27th, 19:11.89), Abraham Torres (33rd, 19:22.92) and Omar Dionisio (37th, 19:34.01).

Wheatmore, keyed by Zach Hazelwood (fourth, 17:26.56), was 12th with 316 points. Trajan Johnson (85th, 22:49.21) was the top finisher for Trinity.

1A MIDWEST

KERNERSVILLE — Bishop McGuinness won the girls team score during Saturday's NCHSAA 1A Midwest regional cross-country meet at Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex.

The Villains totaled 52 points — ahead of Cornerstone Charter with 65 in the eight-team field. Iara Silvagnoli (fifth, 22:30.72), Claire Sullivan (ninth, 23:00.17), Sofia Walter (11th, 23:09.14) led the way for Bishop, followed by Shannon Sullivan (16th, 25:08.07), Alexia Dancausse (26th, 26:06.31), Ainsley Namen (32nd (27:00.28) and Samantha Ruelas-Reyes (34th, 27:34.82).

Bishop's boys were sixth in the 11-team field with 144 points (South Davidson won with 34). Drew Pacholke (fifth, 18:02.23) led the Villains, trailed by Stephen Hawley (23rd, 19:24.61), Cole Clothier (28th, 19:48.14) and Caleb Eaton (43rd, 21:17.03) in the top 50.

3A MIDWEST

SALISBURY — Oak Grove posted a pair of fifth-place team finishes to highlight Saturday's NCHSAA 3A Midwest regional cross-country meet at Salisbury Community Park.

The Grizzlies were fifth among 20 teams in the boys team standings, totaling 106 points. They were fifth among 12 teams in the girls team standings, finishing with 146 points. Ledford was 10th in the boys standings with 306.

Posting top-50 finishes for Oak Grove were: Hunter Creech (ninth, 17:25.60), Aiden Edwards (12th, 17:48.10), Luke Vannoy (13th, 17:49.20), Nathan Welborn (29th, 18:37.40) and Brayden Grover (43rd, 19:20.70) for the boys; Addison Riling (22nd, 22:58.10), Katherine Lockamy (24th, 23:07.00), Isabella Lockamy (36th, 23:50.80), Natalia Everhart (38th, 23:58.70), Victoria Lockamy (41st, 24:06.20) and Elsa Helms (47th, 24:20.80) for the girls.

Ledford's Sawyer Dobbins (21st, 18:25.30) also had a top-50 finish in the boys race. High Point Central's Lindsey Shaw was 68th in the girls race in 26:33.80.

4A MIDWEST

KERNERSVILLE — Ragsdale's Harrison Howard and Southwest Guilford's Faneal Tsegay posted top-50 finishes during Saturday's NCHSAA 4A Midwest regional cross-country meet at Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex.

Howard was 11th in 16:24.85 while Tsegay was 38th in 17:11.09. Ragsdale was 19th (541) while Southwest was 20th (566) among the highly competitive 25-team field. Southwest's Faith Thomas (61st, 21:49.19) and Ragsdale's Logan Brundage (99th, 23:34.50) were the top area runners in the girls race.

FOOTBALL

TRIAD — Eight area football teams will continue play into the state playoffs.

Thomasville, Bishop McGuinness, Ledford and Oak Grove will be at home Friday, while Trinity, T.W. Andrews and East Davidson will be on the road in the NCHSAA playoffs.

High Point Christian received a bye in the first round of the NCISAA playoffs and will host its playoff opener next week.
