LOCAL ROUNDUP: Danville track teams start indoor season

Feb. 27—BOURBONNAIS — The Danville High boys and girls track teams started the season over the weekend at the Olivet Nazarene University High School Indoor Classic.

The girls team was in a tie for 8th on Saturday with Nickya Shields winning the triple jump with an attempt of 11.28 meters and was third in the hurdles with a time of 9.29 seconds.

Abby Decker was fourth in the long jump (5.02m), while Ja'Lorrian Stewart was fifth (10.08m), Gabi Huerta was fifth in the high jump (1.45m), Da'Sani Lewis was eighth in the 200 (27.65) and Rosa Vasquez took ninth in the 600 (1:57.90).

The 800 relay team of Jhe'Nyi Parker, Lewis, Shields and Ashanti Conaway ended up fourth with a time of 1:49.41.

The boys team competed on Friday and took 10th overall with 24 points.

Freshman D'Mario Jackson had the highest individual finish for the Vikings by taking second in the 60 meter dash in a time of 7.11 seconds. The mark tied him with Trent Sherfield's school record for the event.

Collin Lomax was fifth in the shot put (13.51m), while DeVante Johnson was fifth in the high jump (1.75m), Davari Boyd was sixth in the triple jump (12.35m) and ninth in the long jump (5.86m), Matthew Sherman was sixth in the pole vault (3.33m), Jayden Rowell was seventh in the 200 (23.73) and Kaden Vance was 10th in the 600 (1:38.31).

MEN'S COLLEGE BASKETBALL

John Wood 59, DACC 57

DANVILLE — The Jaguars had a 35-23 halftime lead, but could not hold on in losing to the Trailblazers on Saturday.

Terrence Ringo had 14 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks for Danville Area Community College, while Ryan Caddell had 15 points, Payton Weemer had 10 points and six rebounds and Jaylen Simmons and Donovan Parker each had five points.

Jordan Shelton had 20 points for John Wood, who outscored DACC 36-22 in the second half.

The Jaguars will play Spoon River Community College on Wednesday.

DANVILLE — The Lady Jaguars were tied with the Trailblazers 15-15 after the first quarter, but could not keep up in a loss on Saturday.

Keiara Gregory had 15 points for Danville Area Community College, while Jayal Greet had 11 points and five steals, Wariya Alhassan had nine points and 11 rebounds and Jillisa Briggs had eight points, 10 rebounds and four steals and Rylee Dowers had eight points.

Jada Dupree had 20 points for John Wood, while Katey Flynn had 19 points and Alexis Pohlman added 15 points.

The Lady Jaguars will take on Spoon River Community College on Wednesday.

RANTOUL — The Jaguars put the Kays away with a nine-run fifth inning to finish Sunday's game in seven innings.

Brennon Reed had two hits with a triple and four RBIs for Danville Area Community College, while Kody Morton had two hits with a home run and two RBIs, Mason Rice had two RBIs, Shea Zbrozek and Drew Pinskton each had three hits and one RBI, Adam Evans and Brock Bacus each had two hits and a RBI and Ryan Degroot had one RBI.

Nick Krueger had four strikeouts in six innings to get the win for the Jaguars, who will face McHenry County College on Saturday at Mattoon.
