LOCAL ROUNDUP: Central soccer wins against Dudley

Mar. 20—HIGH POINT — High Point Central topped Dudley 1-0 in Mid-State 3A Conference girls soccer Tuesday at Correll-Morris Field.

Isabela Ramos scored the lone goal of the match for the Bison, who improved to 1-6 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, WESTERN GUILFORD

GREENSBORO — Southwest Guilford beat Western Guilford 3-1 in overtime in Metro 4A Conference girls soccer Tuesday at Western.

Katelyn Nguyen and Kory Lloyd scored goals for the Cowgirls (3-3-1 overall, 1-0 conference), while Josie Tucker had an assist.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, FORSYTH COUNTRY DAY

HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian fell 3-1 against Forsyth Country Day in PTAC girls soccer Tuesday at Wesleyan.

Madison Casteen scored off an assist by Madison Talbert for the Trojans (4-3 overall, 0-2 conference). McKinlee Graver made nine saves in goal.

BISHOP McGUINNESS, BETHANY COMMUNITY

SUMMERFIELD — Bishop McGuinness defeated Bethany Community 7-0 in Northwest Piedmont 1A Conference girls soccer Tuesday at Bethany.

Anna Aufrance scored three goals to lead the Villains (2-3-1 overall, 1-0 conference). Lilly Schultz scored two goals. Laney Heafner — who had four assists — and Ashley Hawley each scored one goal, while Alyssa Dixon-Valez had an assist. Hannah Reeves (two saves) and Emmy Valente (one save) split time in goal.

OAK GROVE, FORSYTH HOME EDUCATORS

KERNERSVILLE — Oak Grove tied the Forsyth Home Educators 2-2 in nonconference girls soccer Tuesday at Ivey Redmon. The Grizzlies moved to 2-3-1 overall.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, NORTHERN GUILFORD

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford fell 9-5 against Northern Guilford in Metro 4A Conference baseball Tuesday at Southwest.

Kaden Morgan had two hits and two RBIs for the Cowboys (8-1 overall, 4-1 conference). Ryan Berry tripled and drove in a run, while Eric Lovett also had a hit and an RBI. Evan Hyde added a triple.

HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN, CALDWELL

HIGH POINT — High Point Christian won 16-2 in five innings against Caldwell in PTAC baseball Tuesday at Oak View Baptist Church. The Cougars improved to 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the conference.

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, FORSYTH COUNTRY DAY

LEWISVILLE — Wesleyan Christian won 15-1 in five innings against Forsyth Country Day in PTAC baseball Tuesday at Forsyth.

Cole Bowman had two hits, including a double, and three RBIs to lead the Trojans (7-1 overall, 1-0 conference). Hudson Lance added a double and three RBIs, while Sawyer Black homered and drove in two runs and Nick Papciak had a hit and two RBIs.

Myles Crocker got the pitching win, striking out six while allowing just one hit and two walks over three shutout innings.

WESTCHESTER COUNTRY DAY, CALVARY DAY

WINSTON-SALEM — Westchester Country Day defeated Calvary Day 14-6 in PTAC baseball Tuesday in Winston-Salem.

Ryan Engle went 5 for 5 with two home runs, a triple and five RBIs to lead the Wildcats (5-1 overall, 3-0 conference). Tate Vogler went 4 for 5 with two doubles and three RBIs, while Cameron Daniel added a hit and two RBIs and Carson Daniel had two hits and one RBI. Vogler got the pitching win, striking out eight in four innings.

GLENN, RJ REYNOLDS

KERNERSVILLE — Glenn won 15-0 in five innings against RJ Reynolds in Central Piedmont 4A Conference baseball Tuesday at Glenn.

Chase Gora went 3 for 3 with four RBIs to lead the Bobcats (4-3 overall, 2-2 conference). Kale Woolard added two hits, including a double, and three RBIs, while Gabe Eller and Christopher Shoemaker each had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs. Logan Stump earned the win, striking out two in two hitless innings.

LEDFORD, CENTRAL DAVIDSON

LEXINGTON — Ledford beat Central Davidson 10-7 in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference baseball Tuesday at Central Davidson.

Gabe Barker had three hits and four RBIs for the Panthers (5-1 overall, 1-0 conference). Lucas Riley, who doubled, and Hunter Burton each had a hit and two RBIs.

Barker struck out four in six innings to earn the pitching win.

OAK GROVE, ASHEBORO

MIDWAY — Oak Grove defeated Asheboro 7-5 in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference baseball Tuesday at Oak Grove. The Grizzlies improved to 3-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference.

RAGSDALE, SOUTHEAST GUILFORD

PLEASANT GARDEN — Ragsdale topped Southeast Guilford 10-4 in Metro 4A Conference baseball Tuesday at Southeast.

Owen Robinson had two hits and two RBIs for the Tigers (6-2 overall, 4-1 conference). Savoi Edwards doubled and tripled, while Dillon Bullard homered and drove in two and Kyle Maness had a hit and three RBIs. Robinson got the pitching win, striking out nine in five innings.

TRINITY, UWHARRIE CHARTER

ASHEBORO — Trinity edged Uwharrie Charter 7-6 in PAC 1A/2A baseball Tuesday at Uwharrie. The Bulldogs improved to 4-5 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

WHEATMORE, EASTERN RANDOLPH

TRINITY — Wheatmore outlasted Eastern Randolph 6-4 in PAC 1A/2A baseball Tuesday at Wheatmore.

Lukas Usterbowski went 3 for 3 with a double and three RBIs for the Warriors (4-4 overall, 3-2 conference). Jonathan Heraldo also had a hit and two RBIs, while Rowan Wagner added an RBI. Sean Jennison struck out three in six innings, while Ayden Byrd pitched one inning without a hit or a walk and striking out one.

BOYS TENNIS

HIGH POINT CENTRAL, THOMASVILLE

HIGH POINT — High Point Central edged Thomasville 5-4 in nonconference boys tennis Tuesday at Central. The Bison improved to 1-3 while the Bulldogs dipped to 1-3.

SOUTHWEST GUILFORD, GRIMSLEY

HIGH POINT — Southwest Guilford won 17-2 in three innings against Grimsley in Metro 4A Conference softball Tuesday at Southwest.

Caroline Christman had two hits and three RBIs to lead the Cowgirls (8-1 overall, 5-0 conference). Sachiko Price had two hits, including a triple, and two RBIs, while Camren Allen and Rachel Wagner each had two hits, including a double, and two RBIs.

Christman got the pitching win, striking out seven in three innings.

HIGH POINT CHRISTIAN, METROLINA CHRISTIAN

WALLBURG — High Point Christian rolled to an 11-0 win in five innings against Metrolina Christian in softball Tuesday at Wallburg Baptist Church.

Landyn Smith had two hits and three RBIs for the Cougars. Blakely Bowman added a pair of hits, including a double, and an RBI, while Lila Allred also had two hits and an RBI. Maci Burkhart and Hailey each chipped in a double and an RBI.

Lila Allred struck out four while not allowing a hit, scattering four walks, over five innings for HPCA (6-0).

WESLEYAN CHRISTIAN, CHARLOTTE CHRISTIAN

HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian defeated Charlotte Christian 5-1 in softball Tuesday at Wesleyan's Sandy Ridge field.

Mackenzie Smith had two hits and two RBIs for the Trojans (5-1). Logan Jordan had a hit and an RBI, while Ella Joyce had an RBI. Sara Kate Carr and Alexis Emery each had a double. Maris Morgan got the complete-game pitching win, striking out eight.

EAST DAVIDSON, NORTH ROWAN

THOMASVILLE — East Davidson won 18-0 in three innings against North Rowan in Central Carolina 1A/2A Conference softball Tuesday at Brown Middle.

Sophie Hampton went 2 for 2 with a home run and two RBIs while Nikki Beal went 2 for 2 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Golden Eagles. Kaycee Lewis added a hit and two RBIs, and Adrianna Perkins had two doubles. Kirsten Hedrick struck out nine in earning the complete-game win.

LEDFORD, CENTRAL DAVIDSON

LEXINGTON — Ledford edged Central Davidson 4-3 in Mid-Piedmont 3A Conference softball Tuesday at Central Davidson.

Grace Henry had two hits, including a double, and an RBI for the Panthers (7-0 overall, 1-0 conference). Emma Tesh doubled and drove in a run and Hailey Hoots drove in a run. Leah Leonard got the complete-game win, striking out three.

AT ADERHOLT TRACK

HIGH POINT — Wesleyan Christian won the girls team score while High Point Christian took second in the boys team score during Tuesday's PTAC meet at Aderholt Track.

Wesleyan totaled 169 points in the girls team standings, ahead of second place Forsyth Country Day with 127. HPCA was fifth with 65 and Westchester Country Day was sixth with 54. Forsyth won the boys team standings with 183 points, followed by HPCA with 108. Wesleyan was fourth with 100.5 while Westchester was sixth with 35.5.

Winning for Wesleyan were: Rachel Shaw (girls discus, 76-10.50), Yolanda Calhoun (girls long jump, 18-0.75; girls 100, 12.41; girls 200, 25.70), Isaac Hoots (boys triple jump, 37-4.75), Ellie Roy (girls 300 hurdles, 53.60), Donovan Calhoun (boys 200, 22.20), Jones Barber (boys 3200, 10:07.69) and the girls 4x400 relay (5:11.94).

Winning for HPCA were: Gavin Harris (boys high jump, 6-1), Zoie Hembree (girls pole vault, 10-0), Reade Guthrie (boys pole vault, 9-0), plus the boys 4x200 (1:36.63), girls 4x100 (55.62) and boys 4x100 (45.55) relays.

Westchester was highlighted by three second-place finishes.

BOYS GOLF

AT JAMESTOWN PARK

JAMESTOWN — Bishop McGuinness won Tuesday's Northwest Piedmont 1A Conference boys golf match at Jamestown Park.

The Villains posted a team score of 176, followed by Cornerstone Charter (180), NC Leadership Academy (229) and College Prep & Leadership (242).

William Grissom shot a 41 to lead Bishop, which also got counting scores from Jack Freeman (42), Sam Sherrill (45) and Burns Handy (48).

BISHOP McGUINNESS GIRLS, GRIMSLEY

GREENSBORO — Bishop McGuinness rolled past Grimsley 17-5 in nonconference girls lacrosse Tuesday at Grimsley.

Kate Dennen had four goals and four assists to lead the Villains (6-0). Ella Suire scored five goals, while Sarah Pulliam scored four goals. Kiersten Varner added a goal and an assist. Finley Miller, Morgan Aho and Emery Grunwald each had a goal, and Caroline Duggan and Kate Wolschon each had an assist.

Maddie Edwards made two saves in goal.

NCBCA ALL-DISTRICT

TRIAD — A dozen area basketball players and coaches have been selected for the NC Basketball Coaches Association's all-district teams.

Three players — Bishop McGuinness' Adelaide Jernigan, Oak Grove's Trista Charles and Southern Guilford's Jamias Ferere — were chosen district players of the year, while Southern's Wil Perry was named district coach of the year to highlight the selections.

BASEBALL

WINSTON-SALEM — High Point University lost 7-3 against No. 16 Wake Forest in nonconference baseball Tuesday at David F. Couch Ballpark.

Adam Stuart had two hits while while Eric Grintz had a double and two RBIs to lead the Panthers (7-14), who trailed 4-1 through three innings. Brayden Simpson added a double and an RBI. Seaver King doubled, homered and drove in three for the Demon Deacons (14-6).

Bryan Rivera took the loss in four innings for High Point, while Ben Shenosky got the win for Wake, striking out six while allowing three hits and no walks in four innings.

BASKETBALL

MILES, HAMILTON NAMED NABC ALL-DISTRICT

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — High Point University men's basketball players Duke Miles and Kimani Hamilton have been selected to the National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District teams.

Miles was selected to the District 3 First Team while Hamilton was chosen for the Second Team. UNC Asheville's Drew Pember was also named to the five-player First Team.

Miles leads the team with 17.7 points per game, scoring 20 or more points in 11 games and a career-high 32 points against Hofstra, and leads the team with 3.5 assists per game. He was selected the Big South's Newcomer of the Year, first-team all-conference and named to the conference's all-tournament team.

Hamilton is third on the team with 14.9 points per game and second with 7.5 rebounds per game. He scored 20 or more points in nine games and a career-high 34 points against Radford. He was also named Big South first-team all-conference.

HUSS CHOSEN AS A FINALIST FOR TWO AWARDS

BOSTON — High Point University men's basketball coach Alan Huss has been named a finalist for two of the country's top coaching awards — the Hugh Durham National Coach of the Year and the Joe B. Hall National Coach of the Year.

Twenty finalists have been selected for the Hugh Durham award given annually to the top-mid major coach, while 16 finalists have been chosen for the Joe B. Hall award presented annually to the top first-year coach in Division I.

Huss has led the Panthers to a 25-8 overall record, which is the most wins by a first-year coach in the program's Division I era. They also went 13-3 in the Big South Conference, capturing the regular-season title for the first time since 2015-16.
