Tsimikas' wide free-kick causes some problems for United as Onana comes and fails to claim before Amrabat scrambles a clearance off his own line. This is exactly the start that Anfield wanted.

Liverpool race out the blocks as Dalot turns behind for a corner with just 15 seconds on the clock. Tsimikas delivers before United eventually clear, but Amrabat then needlessly hacks Gravenberch down and concedes a free-kick in a dangerous wide position.

Referee Michael Oliver gets this Premier League game underway at Anfield! The expectant Liverpool crowd will fancy a repeat of last season’s 7-0 humiliation at this very ground against United.

Liverpool are unbeaten in their last seven Premier League home games against United (W4 D3), winning the last two by an aggregate score of 11-0. They last had a longer run without a league defeat at Anfield against them between 1970 and 1979 (nine). Can the Reds improve on that remarkable record here? We’re about to find out as kick-off approaches…

Ten Hag makes four alterations to his side that suffered a disappointing defeat against Bournemouth. Bruno Fernandes is suspended, while Anthony Martial and Harry Maguire are out injured. Reguilon is named as a substitute, with Evans, Varane, Mainoo and Hojlund all returning to the starting XI. McTominay captains United in Fernandes' absence, while Rashford is only deemed fit enough to make the bench for the visitors.

Klopp opts for only one alteration to his last starting line-up in the Premier League against Palace. Young centre-back Quansah drops to the bench, with Konate taking his place alongside Van Dijk. Further forward, Salah, Nunez and Diaz start in a front three that will aim to put United to the sword once more. Alexis Mac Allister, Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara, Diogo Jota, Stefan Bajcetic and Andy Robertson remain sidelined for the Reds.

Pressure has mounted on Erik ten Hag in recent weeks, despite the United boss winning the Premier League’s Manager of the Month for November. The Red Devils were humiliated 3-0 at home to Bournemouth in their last league outing before crashing out of Europe altogether after a 1-0 home defeat to Bayern Munich left them bottom of their Champions League group on Tuesday. Ten Hag’s men still sat sixth in the league table heading into this weekend’s fixtures, although pockets of United supporters appear to be getting frustrated – this game will be pivotal for the Manchester visitors, who need to banish their Anfield demons to keep the noise down around Ten Hag’s future at Old Trafford.

Liverpool headed into the weekend at the Premier League summit after a 2-1 comeback victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last week. Mohamed Salah scored his 200th goal for the club in that come-from-behind triumph, sending the Reds a point clear at the top of the league. However, victory for Arsenal against Brighton and an ill-tempered win for Aston Villa over Brentford earlier on Sunday saw Jurgen Klopp’s side drop to third before kick-off at Anfield. Liverpool were, of course, 7-0 winners in this exact fixture last season and would regain top spot with another derby triumph.
